Verticillium Lecanii for Rice – Control White‑Backed Plant Hopper & Leafhoppers

You walk through your paddy field and see patches of plants turning yellow and drying –“hopper burn.” When you tap the plants, small insects jump. That’s white‑backed plant hopper or brown plant hopper. These pests suck sap and spread viral diseases. Chemical sprays often kill their natural predators and leave residues.

Verticillium lecanii is a natural, effective solution for rice sucking pests.

The fungus infects plant hoppers and leafhoppers through contact. Spores attach to the insect’s body, germinate, and grow inside, killing it within 3‑7 days. It is safe for earthworms and beneficial insects.

How to apply Verticillium for paddy (per acre):

Seed treatment (most effective):

  • Take 100g of Bactostore’s Verticillium powder (or 100 ml liquid)

  • Mix with enough water to coat 10 kg of paddy seeds

  • Stir until seeds are evenly coated

  • Shade dry for 30 minutes before sowing

Soil application (for fields with history of hopper infestation):

  • Mix 1‑2 kg of Verticillium powder (or 1‑2 litres liquid) with 100‑200 kg well‑decomposed FYM

  • Broadcast evenly during the last ploughing and incorporate into soil

Foliar spray (if hoppers are already visible):

  • Mix 2‑5 ml of liquid per litre of water (or 5‑10g powder)

  • Spray on the lower parts of the plants where hoppers hide

  • Apply in early morning or late evening

  • Repeat every 10‑15 days

Why Kuttanad farmers need this: Waterlogged paddy fields are ideal for hopper breeding. Verticillium thrives in high humidity – perfect for Alappuzha’s conditions.
