Unlocking Plantation Yields: How PSB & KMB Biofertilizers Drive Panicle Formation, Capsule Sizing, and Essential Oil Content in Cardamom

Small Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), widely recognized as the "Queen of Spices," is a perennial, shade-loving herbaceous spice crop grown in humid, high-altitude Western Ghats forest ecosystems. Cardamom plants feature underground branching rhizomes from which leafy pseudostems and reproductive panicles (tillers) emerge. Because cardamom produces multiple flowering and picking rounds across a long harvesting season (August to February), continuous nutrient availability in the shallow, humus-rich topsoil is vital.

Phosphorus (P) plays a crucial role during early tiller emergence, root branching, and vigorous flowering panicle formation, while Potassium (K) dominates capsule swelling, seed weight, deep green skin color retention, essential oil (1,8-cineole and terpinyl acetate) accumulation, and drought tolerance during dry winter spells.

In acidic, high-organic-matter forest estate soils (pH 4.5–5.5), applied synthetic phosphatic fertilizers rapidly react with active aluminum and iron oxides, rendering up to 80–85% of applied phosphorus insoluble and unavailable to shallow feeder roots. Furthermore, high rainfall in cardamom hills often causes surface-applied potassic fertilizers to wash down slopes. Inoculating the clump root zone with Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) (Bacillus megaterium) and Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) (Frateuria aurantia) overcomes these uptake barriers:

  • Vigorous Tiller Emergence & Panicle Branching: PSB secretes organic acids (citric, gluconic) that solubilize aluminum-bound phosphates into orthophosphate, driving robust vegetative shoot emergence, high panicle count per clump, and dense flower setting,

  • Plump Pod Sizing & Capsule Density: KMB mobilizes trapped potassium minerals, facilitating sugar and carbohydrate translocation into expanding pods, resulting in large, bold green capsules ($8\text{ mm}+$ size grade) with high individual seed weight,

  • Vivid Green Color & Essential Oil Aroma: Biological potassium activates key enzymatic pathways that retain chlorophyll in the capsule skin post-harvest and enhance volatile essential oil synthesis, delivering premium market prices,

  • Clump Health & Stress Resilience: Continuous microbial activity stimulates active feeder root branching, improving soil organic matter decomposition and helping cardamom clumps survive dry spells without leaf drying or capsule shedding,
