Trichoderma for Soybean: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Healthy Plants & Higher Pod Yield

Trichoderma for Soybean: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Healthy Plants & Higher Pod Yield

Soybean is one of the world's most important oilseed and protein crops, requiring healthy roots and an active rhizosphere for effective nodulation, nutrient uptake, flowering, pod development, and seed filling. Soil-borne fungal pathogens can infect soybean seeds, roots, and stem bases, resulting in poor germination, damping-off, root rot, stem diseases, and significant yield reduction.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects soybean plants from harmful fungi while stimulating vigorous root development and improving soil biological activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, and create favorable conditions for beneficial microbes, including nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a long-lasting beneficial population around soybean roots, providing continuous protection while enhancing nutrient availability and plant growth.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Soybean

  • Improves seed germination and crop establishment.
  • Protects seedlings from soil-borne fungal infections.
  • Suppresses root rot and stem diseases.
  • Encourages deeper and more extensive root development.
  • Improves nodulation by creating a healthier root environment.
  • Enhances nitrogen fixation when used with compatible Rhizobium inoculants.
  • Increases nutrient and water uptake.
  • Promotes vigorous vegetative growth.
  • Improves flowering and pod setting.
  • Enhances pod filling and seed development.
  • Increases seed size, seed weight, and oil content.
  • Improves tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
  • Enhances beneficial soil microbial activity.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility and biological balance.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases in soybean, including:

  • Damping-off
  • Root Rot
  • Seed Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Fusarium Root Rot
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
  • Collar Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Stem Base Rot
  • Sclerotium-related diseases

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects soybean through several biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with disease-causing fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes that break down fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites.
  • Directly parasitizes harmful fungi (mycoparasitism).
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and creates a favorable environment for beneficial microorganisms, including Rhizobium.

These combined actions provide season-long disease protection while promoting healthier crop growth.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat soybean seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

Note: If using Rhizobium inoculant, apply Trichoderma first, allow the seed to dry in the shade, and then apply the Rhizobium culture according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and apply uniformly before sowing or at the early vegetative stage.

Furrow Application

Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into seed furrows to establish beneficial fungi around developing roots.

Drip Irrigation

Liquid Trichoderma formulations may be applied through drip irrigation or irrigation water where suitable, following the product label recommendations.
