Trichoderma for Maize: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Healthy Root Growth & Higher Cob Yield
Share
Maize is one of the world's most important cereal crops, grown for food, feed, starch, ethanol, and industrial applications. High maize productivity depends on vigorous root development, efficient nutrient uptake, and effective protection against soil-borne fungal diseases. Root infections during the early stages of crop growth can reduce plant population, weaken stalks, and significantly lower cob development and grain yield.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally colonizes the maize rhizosphere, protecting roots from disease-causing fungi while stimulating healthier and more extensive root systems. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii suppress harmful pathogens, improve soil microbial activity, and promote stronger plant growth throughout the crop cycle.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary protection, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around maize roots, delivering continuous biological protection while improving overall soil health.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Maize
- Improves seed germination and early crop establishment.
- Protects seedlings from soil-borne fungal infections.
- Suppresses root rot and stalk base diseases.
- Promotes deeper and more extensive root development.
- Enhances nutrient and water absorption.
- Encourages vigorous vegetative growth.
- Improves stalk strength and reduces lodging.
- Supports better tassel and silk development.
- Enhances cob formation and kernel filling.
- Improves grain weight and kernel uniformity.
- Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Enhances beneficial soil microbial populations.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Suitable for sustainable and organic maize production.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases affecting maize, including:
- Root Rot
- Seed Rot
- Seedling Blight
- Damping-off
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Fusarium Stalk Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
- Collar Rot
- Soil-borne fungal infections during crop establishment
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects maize through several complementary biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites.
- Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi (mycoparasitism).
- Activates the plant's natural defense responses (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and root biomass.
- Improves microbial diversity and soil biological activity.
This combination of actions provides long-lasting disease suppression while supporting healthier crop growth.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat maize seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing. Allow the treated seed to dry in the shade before planting.
Soil Application
Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and apply uniformly during land preparation or at sowing.
Furrow Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into planting furrows to establish beneficial fungi around emerging roots.
Drip or Irrigation Application
Where irrigation systems are available, compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations may be applied through drip or irrigation water according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
