Trichoderma for Chilli: Natural Biofungicide for Wilt Control, Root Rot Management & Higher Fruit Yield

Chilli (Capsicum annuum and Capsicum frutescens) is one of the most important spice and vegetable crops grown worldwide for fresh consumption, processing, and export. A healthy root system is essential for vigorous vegetative growth, continuous flowering, fruit development, and high-quality chilli production. However, chilli is highly vulnerable to several destructive soil-borne fungal diseases such as Fusarium wilt, damping-off, root rot, collar rot, and southern blight, which can severely reduce plant population and marketable yield.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects chilli roots against harmful pathogens while promoting stronger root growth and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii establish themselves around the root system, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and enhance overall plant vigor.

Unlike chemical fungicides that provide only temporary protection, Trichoderma colonizes the rhizosphere and forms a living protective barrier around the roots, delivering season-long biological disease suppression while improving soil fertility.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Chilli

  • Improves seed germination and nursery establishment.
  • Protects seedlings from damping-off.
  • Promotes vigorous root development and root branching.
  • Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water absorption.
  • Encourages rapid vegetative growth.
  • Increases flowering and flower retention.
  • Enhances fruit setting and reduces flower drop.
  • Improves fruit size, colour, and uniformity.
  • Enhances fruit firmness and shelf life.
  • Improves tolerance to drought and transplant stress.
  • Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Supports sustainable and organic chilli cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting chilli, including:

  • Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. capsici)
  • Damping-off
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Southern Blight (Sclerotium rolfsii)
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Fusarium Crown Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Seed Rot

Note: Trichoderma is primarily effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as anthracnose, powdery mildew, Cercospora leaf spot, and bacterial leaf spot require an integrated crop protection program.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects chilli plants through several biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These combined biological mechanisms provide continuous protection while promoting vigorous crop growth.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat chilli seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

Nursery Bed Application

Mix 1–2 kg of Trichoderma per acre nursery area with well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost before sowing.

Root Dip Before Transplanting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed FYM or compost and apply uniformly around the root zone during land preparation or after transplanting.

Drip Irrigation

Compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations can be applied through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
