Trichoderma for Black Pepper – Control Quick Wilt and Root Rot

Quick wilt (also called foot rot) is the most devastating disease of black pepper in Kerala. The pathogen Phytophthora capsici attacks the roots, collar region, and leaves. Infected vines show sudden yellowing and drooping of leaves, and the entire vine can collapse within days. The fungus survives in soil for years.

Trichoderma is an effective organic solution. It attacks Phytophthora by coiling around its hyphae and secreting enzymes that break down its cell walls. It also colonises pepper roots, creating a protective zone and triggering the vine's defence responses.

How to use Trichoderma for black pepper:

Preventive soil application (twice a year):

  • Take 200‑250g of Bactostore's Trichoderma powder per vine

  • Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or neem cake

  • Apply in the basin around the vine (15‑20 cm from the trunk) and cover with soil

  • Apply in April‑May (pre‑monsoon) and September‑October (post‑monsoon)

  • For young vines, use half the dose (100‑125g per vine)

For active quick wilt (emergency treatment):

  • Soil drench: Mix 20g of Trichoderma powder in 10 litres of water per vine. Drench the root zone thoroughly. Repeat after 15 days.

  • Foliar spray: Mix 2‑5 ml of Trichoderma liquid (or 5g powder) in 1 litre of water. Spray on leaves, stems, and spikes. Do this every 10‑15 days during monsoon.

  • Combine with neem oil: Add 5 ml neem oil per litre of water to the foliar spray – neem oil acts as a sticker and also has antifungal properties.

For new pepper cuttings:

  • Dip the cut ends in Trichoderma slurry (10g powder in 100 ml water) for 5 minutes before planting.

Important tips for Kannur pepper farmers:

  • Never apply Trichoderma with copper‑based fungicides – they will kill it.

  • Maintain good drainage – waterlogging favours Phytophthora.

  • Mulch the basin with coconut leaves or organic matter to conserve moisture and reduce soil splash.

  • Remove and burn infected vines to prevent spread.
