Arecanut is an important perennial plantation crop grown under warm and humid conditions in Goa. High rainfall, prolonged soil moisture, dense plantation environments, drainage limitations and continuous cultivation can create conditions favorable for several soil- and root-zone problems. An integrated plantation-management program should therefore include drainage, sanitation, balanced nutrition, organic matter management and suitable biological crop-protection measures.
Trichoderma is a group of beneficial fungi widely used in agriculture as a microbial biofungicide and biological soil-management organism. Species such as Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma asperellum can be incorporated into preventive and integrated biological programs for arecanut plantations.
Under favorable conditions, Trichoderma can colonize organic matter and establish around the rhizosphere. It can compete with certain soil-borne fungi for space and nutrients and may act through multiple biological interactions. This makes Trichoderma particularly useful as a component of preventive soil and root-zone management.
For established arecanut palms, Trichoderma applications should generally focus on the biologically active root-zone area rather than being concentrated only against the stem. The appropriate application zone varies with palm age, root distribution, soil type and plantation-management system.
Trichoderma can be incorporated with well-decomposed farmyard manure, compost or other suitable organic amendments before application to the root zone. Adequate soil moisture, aeration and organic matter can help create favorable conditions for beneficial fungal establishment.
Depending on the formulation and applicable label recommendations, liquid Trichoderma may be suitable for root-zone drenching or approved irrigation applications. Wettable powder, talc-based and water-soluble formulations can provide additional options for plantation soil application.
Biological disease management is generally more effective when incorporated preventively rather than relying on microbial products only after severe symptoms have developed. Regular plantation observation and early identification of abnormal root, stem, leaf or crown symptoms remain important.
Trichoderma should be used as one component of integrated disease management (IDM). Proper drainage, sanitation, removal of severely affected plant material where recommended, balanced nutrition, irrigation management and locally appropriate disease-management practices remain important.
Care should also be taken when combining Trichoderma with chemical fungicides. Because Trichoderma itself is a beneficial fungus, some fungicides can reduce its viability. Compatibility information and appropriate application intervals should therefore be followed.
A broader microbial program for arecanut may combine Trichoderma for appropriate soil and root-zone management with NPK consortium, PSB, KMB and other microbial biofertilizers for nutrient management. Suitable entomopathogenic microorganisms can be selected separately for appropriate insect pest-management objectives.
Peak Laboratories supplies Trichoderma and other agricultural microbial formulations in liquid, wettable powder and water-soluble forms for arecanut growers, plantations, agricultural dealers, distributors, institutional buyers and bulk requirements.
