Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Root Rot

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Root Rot

Root rot is one of the most damaging soil-related problems in mango orchards. Poor drainage, prolonged soil moisture, compacted soils, and infection by soil-borne pathogens can weaken feeder roots, reduce nutrient uptake, slow vegetative growth, and ultimately decrease fruit production. Healthy root systems are essential for maintaining tree vigor, making preventive root-zone management an important part of orchard care. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium and biological biofungicide that supports healthy rhizosphere biology and helps suppress several important soil-borne fungal pathogens associated with root diseases.

After application through soil drenching, drip irrigation, or fertigation, Streptomyces lydicus colonizes the rhizosphere surrounding feeder roots. It competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and colonization sites while producing naturally occurring antimicrobial metabolites that help suppress pathogens including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. By reducing pathogen pressure around healthy roots, it helps maintain an active and balanced microbial ecosystem that supports normal root development.

Healthy roots absorb water and nutrients more efficiently, enabling mango trees to maintain vigorous growth, healthy foliage, balanced flowering, improved fruit set, and better fruit quality. Strong feeder roots also improve recovery after periods of excessive rainfall or temporary waterlogging when disease pressure is often highest. For orchards with existing disease problems, Streptomyces lydicus is most effective when used preventively or as part of a broader integrated disease management strategy that includes improved drainage, irrigation management, orchard sanitation, and balanced nutrition.

For maximum biological activity, Streptomyces lydicus should be integrated with Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, compost, and other organic soil amendments. These beneficial microorganisms help improve soil biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and long-term rhizosphere health, supporting sustainable mango production.

Commercial mango growers increasingly use Streptomyces lydicus as part of preventive orchard management because healthy roots are essential for consistent productivity. By protecting the rhizosphere, supporting beneficial microorganisms, improving nutrient use efficiency, and helping suppress soil-borne fungal pathogens, Streptomyces lydicus contributes to healthier orchards, improved yields, and sustainable fruit production.
