Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Fruit Set

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Fruit Set

Fruit set is one of the most critical stages in mango production because it determines the number of fruits that develop into a marketable harvest. Even when flowering is abundant, poor root health, nutrient deficiencies, soil-borne diseases, moisture stress, and microbial imbalance can lead to poor pollination success, weak fruit retention, and excessive fruit drop. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium that helps create healthy root-zone conditions, allowing mango trees to better support flowering, fruit set, and early fruit development.

Following application through soil drenching, drip irrigation, or fertigation, Streptomyces lydicus rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere around feeder roots. It naturally competes with harmful soil-borne fungi such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora, reducing pathogen pressure while maintaining a healthy microbial balance. This protective root environment encourages continuous root growth and efficient nutrient absorption throughout the fruit-setting period.

Healthy feeder roots are essential for supplying the tree with phosphorus, potassium, calcium, boron, zinc, magnesium, and other nutrients required during flowering and fruit development. Improved nutrient availability supports stronger flower retention, better pollen development, healthier fruit initiation, and improved fruit retention after flowering. Strong root systems also help mango trees tolerate drought, heat stress, temporary nutrient deficiencies, and irrigation fluctuations that often contribute to premature fruit drop.

For optimum fruit set, Streptomyces lydicus should be incorporated into a complete orchard nutrition and biological management program. It performs exceptionally well with Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, and organic soil amendments. Together, these beneficial microorganisms improve nutrient cycling, strengthen soil biology, and maintain healthy rhizosphere activity during critical reproductive stages.

Commercial mango growers increasingly use Streptomyces lydicus because consistent fruit set begins with healthy roots and biologically active soil. By protecting the root zone, improving fertilizer use efficiency, reducing disease pressure, and enhancing overall tree vigor, Streptomyces lydicus contributes to improved fruit retention, higher marketable yields, superior fruit quality, and long-term orchard sustainability. It is suitable for conventional, integrated, organic, and export-oriented mango production systems.
