Streptomyces Lydicus for Drought Tolerance in Mango
Share
Water scarcity is one of the major challenges affecting mango production in many growing regions. Prolonged dry periods, irregular rainfall, declining groundwater availability, and increasing temperatures can reduce root activity, limit nutrient uptake, decrease flowering, increase fruit drop, and lower fruit quality. Although no biological product can eliminate drought, maintaining a healthy and active root system helps mango trees make better use of available soil moisture. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium and biological biofungicide that supports root health and improves the biological activity of the rhizosphere, helping mango trees remain more resilient during drought conditions.
After application through drip irrigation, fertigation, or soil drenching, Streptomyces lydicus colonizes the root zone where it suppresses soil-borne fungal pathogens including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. By protecting feeder roots from disease, the microorganism allows the root system to continue developing and functioning efficiently. Healthy feeder roots can explore a larger volume of soil, improving the tree's ability to absorb available water and essential nutrients during moisture stress.
An active root system enhances the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, and other nutrients required to maintain normal physiological processes during drought. Better nutrient uptake supports healthier foliage, stronger branches, improved flowering, enhanced fruit retention, and more consistent fruit development when irrigation water is limited. Healthy roots also recover more quickly once rainfall or irrigation resumes, allowing the orchard to return to normal growth with less interruption.
For improved drought resilience, Streptomyces lydicus should be used as part of an integrated orchard management program that includes mulching, organic matter application, efficient irrigation scheduling, moisture conservation, and complementary beneficial microorganisms. It is compatible with Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, and Paecilomyces lilacinus. Together these biological inputs improve soil structure, nutrient cycling, microbial diversity, and root health, all of which contribute to better drought resilience.
Commercial mango growers increasingly incorporate Streptomyces lydicus into sustainable orchard management because healthy roots are essential for maintaining productivity under water-limited conditions. By improving rhizosphere health, protecting feeder roots, enhancing nutrient use efficiency, and supporting long-term soil biology, Streptomyces lydicus helps orchards perform more consistently while reducing production losses associated with drought stress. It is suitable for conventional, integrated, organic, and regenerative mango farming systems.
