PSB and KMB Biofertilizers for Karnataka Agriculture

Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) and Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) are beneficial microorganisms used to support biological nutrient availability in agricultural soils. Karnataka farmers cultivating sugarcane, paddy, maize, ragi, coffee, arecanut, coconut, banana and vegetables can include suitable PSB and KMB formulations in integrated nutrient management programmes. PSB help solubilize certain phosphorus compounds, while KMB can mobilize potassium from suitable soil minerals through microbial processes. Their effectiveness depends on microbial strain, soil nutrient reserves, pH, moisture, temperature and correct application practices.

Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria for Root Development and Phosphorus Availability

Phosphorus plays an important role in root development, energy transfer, crop establishment and reproductive growth. However, some phosphorus in agricultural soils occurs in relatively insoluble forms that plants cannot readily absorb. Suitable PSB strains release organic acids and other metabolites that can help solubilize certain phosphorus compounds, potentially improving nutrient availability near the root zone. Farmers growing paddy, sugarcane, maize, coffee, arecanut and vegetables can use PSB alongside soil testing and balanced fertilizer recommendations rather than as a complete substitute for phosphorus fertilizers.

Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria for Plantation Crops and Horticulture

Potassium contributes to plant water regulation, enzyme activity, carbohydrate transport and several other physiological processes. Certain soil minerals contain potassium that is not immediately available for plant uptake, and suitable KMB strains can contribute to its gradual release under favourable conditions. Karnataka plantation farmers cultivating coffee, arecanut, coconut, banana, black pepper and other horticultural crops may include KMB in integrated potassium management programmes. Microbial inoculation should complement crop-specific potassium recommendations, irrigation management, organic matter improvement and periodic soil testing.

PSB and KMB Application Through Soil Drenching and Drip Irrigation

PSB and KMB biofertilizers are available in liquid, talc-based powder and other suitable carrier formulations for agricultural use. Depending on the approved product label, farmers may apply these microorganisms through seed treatment, seedling root dipping, soil incorporation, root-zone drenching, orchard basin application or compatible drip irrigation systems. For applicable Bactostore India products, general field recommendations include 1–2 kg of powder biofertilizer or 2 litres of liquid biofertilizer per acre per application, subject to crop-specific label directions. Talc-based formulations used through suitable drip systems require thorough mixing, continuous agitation, appropriate filtration and irrigation-line flushing to reduce sediment accumulation.
