How to use NPK-Zn consortia
Share
Important: This guide is specifically for powder-based NPK-Zn Consortia formulations, commonly available in 500g or 1kg packets.
1. CHARACTERISTICS OF POWDER FORMULATION
- Form: Fine, carrier-based powder (carrier is usually lignite/charcoal/peat)
- CFU Count: Typically 1-5 × 10⁷ CFU/g of each bacterial strain
- Shelf Life: 6-12 months at room temperature (check expiry date)
- Key Advantage: Better shelf stability than liquids in hot Indian conditions
2. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS FOR POWDER USE
- Store in cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Do NOT mix with chemical fungicides/pesticides
- Use chlorine-free water for all preparations
- Always shade dry treated seeds/seedlings
- Apply in evening for best results
- Ensure soil moisture at application time
3. APPLICATION METHODS & DOSAGE
Standard Dosage: 500 grams per acre per application
(Always verify package instructions)
A. SEED TREATMENT (Most Recommended Method)
Best for: Wheat, Rice, Maize, Pulses, Oilseeds, Cotton, Vegetables
Procedure:
- For 1 acre seeds: Take 100-150g of NPK-Zn powder
- Prepare sticker solution:
- Option 1: 10% jaggery water (100g jaggery in 1L water, boil & cool)
- Option 2: 5% sugar solution (50g sugar in 1L water)
- Option 3: Gum arabic solution (10g in 1L water)
- Mix powder with 200-300ml of sticker solution to make slurry
- Spread seeds on clean plastic sheet/tarpaulin
- Pour slurry over seeds, mix thoroughly until uniform coating
- Shade dry for 20-30 minutes (DO NOT sun dry)
- Sow immediately on same day
B. SEEDLING ROOT DIP (For Transplanted Crops)
Essential for: Paddy, Tomato, Chilli, Brinjal, Cabbage, Onion, Cauliflower
Procedure:
- Take 200-250g powder for 1 acre seedlings
- Mix in 15-20 liters of water in bucket
- Add 1 handful of soil from same field (creates protective medium)
- Dip seedling roots for 15-20 minutes
- Transplant immediately after dipping
- Discard leftover solution (do not reuse)
C. SOIL APPLICATION METHODS
Method 1: With FYM/Compost (Highly Effective)
- Take 500g NPK-Zn powder
- Mix with 50-100kg well-decomposed Farm Yard Manure/compost
- Ensure uniform mixing
- Broadcast in field just before sowing/transplanting
- Lightly incorporate into soil (0-6 inch depth)
Method 2: Direct Soil Application
- Mix 500g powder in 40-50kg of moist field soil
- Make uniform mixture
- Broadcast evenly in field
- Irrigate lightly immediately after application
D. DRIP IRRIGATION (Fertigation)
Best for: Vegetables, Sugarcane, Orchards, Drip-irrigated crops
Procedure:
- Take 500g powder per acre
- Mix in 5-10 liters water, stir well
- Filter through muslin cloth to remove carrier particles
- Add filtered solution to drip irrigation tank
- Run drip system normally
- Best timing: Apply in last 10-15 minutes of irrigation cycle
E. SPECIAL APPLICATIONS
For Sugarcane Setts:
- Take 250g powder per acre sets
- Mix with 10L water + 10% jaggery solution
- Dip cut ends of setts for 15 minutes
- Plant immediately
For Potato Tubers:
- Take 200g powder for 1 acre seed tubers
- Mix with sticker solution as for seed treatment
- Coat tubers evenly
- Shade dry and plant
