The pseudostem weevil is a devastating pest of banana. Larvae bore inside the pseudostem, creating tunnels that cause the plant to collapse. Chemical insecticides cannot reach the larvae inside the plant. But Beauveria bassiana has a unique advantage – it can act as an endophyte, colonising the plant’s internal tissues and killing the larvae from within.

How endophytic Beauveria works: When applied as a root dip, soil drench, or injection, the fungus enters the plant’s vascular system and grows systemically inside the pseudostem. When weevil larvae bore into the stem, they encounter the fungus and become infected. The fungus then kills the larvae before they can cause significant damage.

Research evidence: Studies have shown that Beauveria bassiana strains can successfully colonise banana plants when applied as a root drench or injection. Colonised plants showed significant reduction in pseudostem weevil damage compared to untreated controls.

How to apply Beauveria for endophytic weevil control:

Root dip for suckers (before planting):

  • Mix 10g of Bactostore’s Beauveria powder (or 10 ml liquid) in 1 litre of water

  • Dip the base of the banana sucker or tissue‑culture plantlet for 15‑20 minutes

  • This allows the fungus to enter the plant through the roots

Soil drench at planting (for endophytic colonisation):

  • Mix 200‑250g of Beauveria powder (or 200‑250 ml liquid) in 10 litres of water

  • Drench around the root zone immediately after planting

  • The fungus will colonise the roots and move upward

Pseudostem injection (for existing plants):

  • Mix 20g of Beauveria powder in 1 litre of water

  • Using a syringe (without needle), inject 10‑15 ml into the pseudostem at 3‑4 points about 30 cm above ground

  • Apply at 5 months after planting (135 days)

  • Repeat at 6th and 7th months for continuous protection

For root weevils (soil application):

  • Mix 200‑250g of Beauveria powder with 10‑15 kg FYM per pit at planting time
