Bacillus subtilis for Carnation – Biological Root Protection, Stem Strength, Flowering & Premium Cut Flower Quality
Share
Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) cultivation under protected greenhouse conditions is vulnerable to devastating vascular wilt and foliar stem blights, notably Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi), Alternaria Blight / Branch Rot (Alternaria dianthi), and Carnation Rust (Uromyces dianthi). Fusarium invades root systems and lower stem bases, causing vascular browning, one-sided branch wilting, and complete crop collapse. Drenching bed lines, applying root dips during planting, or running Bacillus subtilis through drip fertigation establishes a dense bio-protective shield around root networks and lower stem bases. The bacteria colonize host tissues, producing cyclic lipopeptides (surfactin, iturin, fengycin) that disrupt fungal spore germination and stop hyphal colonization in root vascular bundles.
Beyond disease control, Bacillus subtilis acts as a valuable plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in intensive floriculture systems. It solubilizes fixed soil phosphorus, secretes siderophores for iron mobilization, and stimulates root system expansion. Enhanced root health supports strong, erect stem growth, reduces calyx splitting in flower buds, and improves bloom size and color intensity. Regular application ensures clean, unblemished cut carnations with extended post-harvest vase life.
Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Carnation Cultivation
Carnation is a long-duration greenhouse crop that requires a healthy and active root system for continuous flowering and premium cut flower production. Healthy roots support efficient water and nutrient absorption, resulting in stronger stems and higher-quality blooms.
Bacillus subtilis rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere and competes with disease-causing fungi and bacteria for nutrients and space. It also produces natural antimicrobial metabolites that suppress pathogens while promoting beneficial microbial populations.
Healthy roots encourage vigorous shoot growth, continuous flower initiation, improved stem strength, and excellent post-harvest performance.
