Trichoderma for Tea: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Collar Rot Control & Higher Green Leaf Yield

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the world's most valuable plantation crops, cultivated for black tea, green tea, white tea, oolong tea, herbal blends, and export. High-quality tea production depends on healthy root systems, vigorous bush growth, efficient nutrient uptake, and continuous production of tender shoots. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, nursery damping-off, and stem base diseases can weaken tea bushes, reduce shoot production, and lower both yield and tea quality.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects tea roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous feeder root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy bush growth throughout the production cycle.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide only temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable tea cultivation.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Tea

  • Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
  • Suppresses root rot and collar rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water uptake.
  • Enhances bush vigor and canopy development.
  • Encourages healthy flush production.
  • Increases tender shoot formation.
  • Improves green leaf yield.
  • Enhances leaf quality, aroma precursors, and processing quality.
  • Improves drought tolerance and environmental stress resistance.
  • Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Extends productive life of tea bushes.
  • Supports sustainable and organic tea cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting tea, including:

  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Brown Root Rot
  • Black Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Fusarium Root Rot
  • Nursery Damping-off
  • Seedling Blight
  • Stem Base Rot

Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as blister blight, grey blight, black rot, and red rust require integrated disease management practices.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects tea bushes through multiple biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous bush growth and continuous leaf production.

Recommended Application

Nursery Application

Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings or cuttings.

Root Dip Before Planting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling or rooted cutting roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Soil Application

Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100–200 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or compost around the root zone 2–3 times annually.

Bush Basin Application

Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per mature bush with organic manure and apply around the drip zone. Irrigate immediately after application.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose where drip systems are available.
