Trichoderma for Rose: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Collar Rot Control & Better Flower Yield
Share
Rose (Rosa spp.) is one of the world's most valuable ornamental and commercial flower crops cultivated for cut flowers, loose flowers, landscaping, perfume extraction, essential oils, cosmetics, and export. Premium-quality rose production depends on healthy roots, vigorous plant growth, balanced nutrient uptake, continuous flowering, and strong stems. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, damping-off, stem base rot, and Fusarium wilt can significantly reduce plant vigor, flower production, and plantation longevity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects rose roots against harmful soil-borne pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous feeder root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy plant growth throughout the production cycle.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable rose cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Rose
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot and collar rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances plant vigor and branching.
- Encourages continuous flowering.
- Produces larger, brighter, and more uniform blooms.
- Improves flower colour, fragrance, and petal quality.
- Increases stem length and stem strength for cut flowers.
- Extends vase life and post-harvest quality.
- Enhances drought tolerance and environmental stress resistance.
- Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends productive life of rose plants.
- Supports sustainable and organic rose cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting roses, including:
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Stem Base Rot
- Fusarium Wilt
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Damping-off
- Seedling Blight
- Black Root Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as black spot, powdery mildew, downy mildew, rust, and Botrytis blight require integrated disease management with appropriate foliar treatments.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects rose plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root development and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and premium flower production.
Recommended Application
Root Dip Before Planting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip bare-root plants or nursery saplings for 20–30 minutes before planting.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100–200 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake before planting and repeat every 60–90 days.
Basin Application
Apply 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per mature rose plant mixed with organic manure around the root zone and irrigate immediately.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
