Trichoderma for Pigeon Pea: Natural Biofungicide for Fusarium Wilt Control, Root Protection & Higher Yield

Pigeon pea (Tur/Arhar) is one of the most important pulse crops in India, valued for its high protein content and ability to improve soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation. A healthy root system is essential for effective nodulation, nutrient uptake, flowering, pod setting, and grain development. However, pigeon pea is highly susceptible to several destructive soil-borne fungal diseases, especially Fusarium wilt, which can cause severe plant mortality and significant yield losses.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects pigeon pea roots against harmful fungi while improving root growth and soil biological activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii establish themselves in the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, and create favorable conditions for beneficial microorganisms, including Rhizobium, leading to healthier plants and better crop performance.

Unlike chemical fungicides, Trichoderma provides long-term biological protection by colonizing the root zone throughout the crop cycle while improving soil health and plant resilience.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Pigeon Pea

  • Improves seed germination and crop establishment.
  • Protects seedlings from damping-off and early fungal infections.
  • Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
  • Promotes vigorous and deeper root development.
  • Improves nodulation when used with compatible Rhizobium cultures.
  • Enhances nitrogen fixation.
  • Increases nutrient and moisture uptake.
  • Promotes healthy vegetative growth.
  • Improves flowering and pod setting.
  • Increases pod filling and grain weight.
  • Enhances drought tolerance and stress resistance.
  • Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Supports sustainable and organic pulse cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases affecting pigeon pea, including:

  • Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium udum)
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Damping-off
  • Seed Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Dry Root Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
  • Sclerotium Stem Rot

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects pigeon pea through several biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the root zone before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and supports beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria.

This integrated mode of action provides season-long disease protection while enhancing overall crop health.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat pigeon pea seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.

If Rhizobium inoculant is used, first treat the seed with Trichoderma, allow it to dry in the shade, and then apply the Rhizobium culture according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Soil Application

Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and apply uniformly before sowing.

Furrow Application

Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into planting furrows to establish beneficial fungi around developing roots.

Drip Irrigation

Compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations may be applied through drip irrigation where available, according to the recommended dose.
