Trichoderma for Groundnut: Natural Biofungicide for Stem Rot, Root Rot Control & Higher Pod Yield

Trichoderma for Groundnut: Natural Biofungicide for Stem Rot, Root Rot Control & Higher Pod Yield

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea), also known as peanut, is one of the most important oilseed crops cultivated for edible kernels, cooking oil, confectionery products, peanut butter, animal feed, and export. Profitable groundnut cultivation depends on healthy roots, efficient nodulation, vigorous vegetative growth, proper pegging, and uniform pod development. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as stem rot, collar rot, root rot, seedling diseases, and damping-off can significantly reduce plant stand, pod filling, and final yield.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects groundnut roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous root growth. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy crop growth throughout the season.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, offering long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable groundnut cultivation.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Groundnut

  • Promotes vigorous root development.
  • Suppresses stem rot, collar rot, and root rot pathogens.
  • Improves seed germination and seedling establishment.
  • Enhances nutrient and water uptake.
  • Encourages better root nodulation.
  • Improves peg formation and pod setting.
  • Produces larger, heavier, and well-filled pods.
  • Increases kernel size, shelling percentage, and oil content.
  • Improves drought tolerance and environmental stress resistance.
  • Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Supports sustainable and organic groundnut cultivation.
  • Enhances overall crop productivity.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting groundnut, including:

  • Stem Rot (Sclerotium rolfsii)
  • Collar Rot
  • Root Rot
  • Aspergillus Crown Rot
  • Fusarium Wilt
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Seedling Blight
  • Damping-off
  • Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)

Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as tikka leaf spot, rust, and web blotch require integrated disease management practices.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects groundnut plants through multiple biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates feeder root development and improves nodulation.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting healthy plant growth and improved pod production.

Recommended Application

Seed Treatment

Treat groundnut seeds with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed. Shade dry the treated seeds for 20–30 minutes before sowing.

Soil Application

Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake before sowing.

Furrow Application

Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into sowing furrows before planting.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
