Trichoderma for Groundnut: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Healthy Pegging & Higher Pod Yield
Share
Groundnut is an important oilseed crop cultivated for its edible kernels, oil production, and export value. Healthy roots and a disease-free soil environment are essential for proper flowering, pegging, pod formation, and kernel filling. Soil-borne fungal diseases can attack seeds, roots, pegs, and developing pods, resulting in poor crop establishment, reduced pod set, empty pods, and lower oil yield.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects groundnut roots from harmful fungi while improving root growth, nutrient uptake, and soil microbial activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress pathogenic fungi, and create a healthier root environment for continuous crop growth.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide only temporary protection, Trichoderma establishes itself around the root system, providing season-long biological disease suppression while improving soil fertility and plant vigor.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Groundnut
- Improves seed germination and crop establishment.
- Protects seedlings from damping-off.
- Suppresses root rot and stem diseases.
- Promotes deeper and more vigorous root growth.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances nodulation when used with compatible Rhizobium inoculants.
- Encourages healthy flowering.
- Improves peg penetration into the soil.
- Increases pod formation and pod filling.
- Enhances kernel size and kernel weight.
- Improves oil content and seed quality.
- Reduces plant stress during dry conditions.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several important soil-borne diseases in groundnut, including:
- Damping-off
- Seed Rot
- Seedling Blight
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Stem Rot (Sclerotium rolfsii)
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
- Pod Rot (soil-borne fungal complex)
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects groundnut through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with disease-causing fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes that break down fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes harmful fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient cycling.
These biological actions provide long-lasting protection while supporting healthy crop development.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat groundnut seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.
If using Rhizobium culture, first apply Trichoderma, allow the seed to dry in the shade, and then apply the Rhizobium inoculant according to the recommended procedure.
Soil Application
Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and apply uniformly before sowing.
Furrow Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into planting furrows to establish beneficial fungi around developing roots.
Drip Irrigation
Compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations may be applied through drip irrigation where available, following the manufacturer's recommended dose.
