Trichoderma for Dragon Fruit: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Stem Rot Control & Higher Fruit Yield
Share
Dragon fruit (Selenicereus undatus, formerly Hylocereus undatus), also known as Pitaya or Pitahaya, is a rapidly expanding high-value fruit crop cultivated for fresh consumption, processing, beverages, and export. Commercial dragon fruit production depends on healthy roots, vigorous stem growth, efficient nutrient uptake, regular flowering, and superior fruit quality. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, stem base rot, collar rot, and damping-off in young plants can significantly reduce plant vigor, flowering, fruit production, and plantation lifespan.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects dragon fruit roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and support healthy plant growth throughout the crop cycle.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable dragon fruit cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Dragon Fruit
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot and stem base rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances stem growth and branching.
- Encourages early flowering.
- Improves flower retention and fruit set.
- Produces larger, heavier, and more uniform fruits.
- Improves fruit sweetness (°Brix), colour, and pulp quality.
- Enhances fruit firmness and shelf life.
- Improves tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends plantation productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic dragon fruit cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting dragon fruit, including:
- Root Rot
- Stem Base Rot
- Collar Rot
- Fusarium Stem Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Damping-off (young plants)
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
- Nursery Root Diseases
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Stem diseases such as anthracnose, canker, and bacterial soft rot require integrated crop management practices for effective control.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects dragon fruit plants through several biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and high fruit productivity.
Recommended Application
Cutting Treatment
Dip dragon fruit stem cuttings in a suspension prepared with 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water for 20–30 minutes before planting.
Pit Application
Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost and apply into each planting pit before transplanting.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100 kg of FYM or compost around the root zone every 3–4 months.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
