Trichoderma for Coffee: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Collar Rot Control & Higher Coffee Bean Yield
Share
Coffee (Coffea arabica, Coffea canephora and Coffea liberica) is one of the world's most valuable plantation crops cultivated for roasted coffee beans, instant coffee, specialty coffee, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and export. High-quality coffee production depends on healthy feeder roots, vigorous plant growth, balanced nutrient uptake, efficient flowering, and uniform berry development. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, stem base rot, damping-off, and nursery root diseases can reduce plant vigor, berry production, and plantation longevity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects coffee roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous feeder root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy plant growth throughout the production cycle.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide only temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable coffee cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Coffee
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot and collar rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances plant vigor and canopy development.
- Encourages healthy flowering and berry setting.
- Improves berry retention and uniform fruit development.
- Produces larger, heavier coffee cherries.
- Improves bean size, bean density, and cup quality.
- Enhances aroma, flavour potential, and bean uniformity.
- Improves drought tolerance and environmental stress resistance.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends plantation productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic coffee cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting coffee, including:
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Stem Base Rot
- Phytophthora Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Nursery Root Diseases
- Seedling Damping-off
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar and berry diseases such as coffee leaf rust, coffee berry disease, anthracnose, and Cercospora leaf spot require integrated disease management practices.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects coffee plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and superior coffee bean production.
Recommended Application
Nursery Application
Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings.
Root Dip Before Planting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.
Basin Application
Mix 100–200 g of Trichoderma powder per mature plant with 10–20 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or compost and apply uniformly around the root zone. Irrigate immediately after application.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100–200 kg of FYM or organic compost around the plantation root zone 2–3 times annually, preferably before monsoon and after harvest.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose where drip systems are available.
