Trichoderma for Coconut: Natural Biofungicide for Basal Stem Rot, Root Rot Control & Higher Nut Yield

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is one of the world's most important plantation crops, cultivated for tender coconuts, copra, coconut oil, coconut water, coir, activated carbon, and export. Long-term productivity of coconut plantations depends on healthy root systems, efficient nutrient uptake, vigorous palm growth, and disease-free plantations. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as basal stem rot (Ganoderma wilt), root rot, collar rot, bud rot, and nursery root diseases can severely reduce palm vigor, nut production, and plantation lifespan.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects coconut roots against harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous feeder root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy palm growth throughout the production cycle.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable coconut plantation management.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Coconut

  • Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
  • Suppresses basal stem rot (Ganoderma wilt) and root rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water uptake.
  • Enhances palm vigor and canopy development.
  • Supports healthy flowering and nut setting.
  • Improves nut retention and bunch development.
  • Increases nut size, weight, and copra recovery.
  • Improves copra quality and oil content.
  • Enhances drought tolerance and stress resistance.
  • Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Extends productive lifespan of coconut palms.
  • Supports sustainable and organic coconut cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting coconut, including:

  • Basal Stem Rot (Ganoderma Wilt)
  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Phytophthora Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Fusarium Root Rot
  • Nursery Root Diseases
  • Seedling Damping-off
  • Stem Base Rot

Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases, particularly Ganoderma-related basal stem rot when used as part of an integrated disease management program. Foliar diseases and bud rot require additional management practices.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects coconut palms through multiple biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the palm's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological mechanisms provide long-term disease suppression while promoting healthier palms and improved nut production.

Recommended Application

Nursery Application

Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting coconut seedlings.

Root Dip Before Planting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Basin Application

Mix 100–200 g of Trichoderma powder per mature palm with 10–20 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost and apply evenly around the palm basin (1–2 m from the trunk). Irrigate immediately after application.

Soil Application

Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100–200 kg of FYM or compost around the plantation root zone 2–3 times annually, preferably before monsoon and after harvest.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
