Trichoderma for Cinnamon: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Collar Rot Management & Higher Bark Yield

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum / Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Cinnamomum cassia) is a premium spice crop cultivated for its aromatic bark, leaves, essential oils, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and export. Commercial cinnamon production depends on healthy root systems, vigorous shoot growth, efficient nutrient uptake, and high-quality bark production. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, damping-off, and nursery root diseases can reduce plant vigor, bark yield, and plantation productivity.

Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects cinnamon roots against harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous feeder root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy plant growth throughout the production cycle.

Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, delivering long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable cinnamon cultivation.

Benefits of Trichoderma in Cinnamon

  • Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
  • Suppresses root rot and collar rot pathogens.
  • Improves nutrient and water uptake.
  • Enhances shoot growth and coppice regeneration.
  • Encourages healthy branching.
  • Improves bark thickness and uniformity.
  • Enhances bark quality and market value.
  • Improves essential oil content and cinnamaldehyde concentration.
  • Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
  • Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
  • Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
  • Improves long-term soil fertility.
  • Extends plantation productivity.
  • Supports sustainable and organic cinnamon cultivation.

Diseases Managed

Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting cinnamon, including:

  • Root Rot
  • Collar Rot
  • Phytophthora Root Rot
  • Pythium Root Rot
  • Rhizoctonia Root Rot
  • Fusarium Root Rot
  • Stem Base Rot
  • Nursery Root Diseases
  • Seedling Damping-off
  • Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)

Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as leaf spot, leaf blight, pink disease, and sooty mould should be managed through integrated crop management practices.

Mode of Action

Trichoderma protects cinnamon plants through several biological mechanisms:

  • Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
  • Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
  • Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
  • Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
  • Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
  • Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
  • Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
  • Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.

These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous growth and premium-quality bark production.

Recommended Application

Nursery Application

Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings.

Root Dip Before Planting

Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.

Basin Application

Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per plant with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake and apply around the base of each plant. Irrigate immediately after application.

Soil Application

Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100 kg of FYM or compost around the plantation root zone 2–3 times annually, preferably before monsoon and after pruning or harvesting.

Drip Irrigation

Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
