Trichoderma for Cauliflower: Natural Biofungicide for Club Root, Damping-off Control & Higher Curd Yield
Share
Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) is one of the most commercially important cole vegetables cultivated for fresh markets, processing, freezing, dehydration, and export. Premium-quality cauliflower production depends on healthy seedlings, vigorous root systems, balanced nutrient uptake, and uniform curd formation. Soil-borne diseases such as damping-off, root rot, collar rot, club root, and Fusarium wilt can significantly reduce plant population, curd size, and marketable yield.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects cauliflower roots against harmful soil-borne pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy crop growth throughout the growing season.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, offering long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable cauliflower cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Cauliflower
- Promotes vigorous root development.
- Suppresses damping-off and root rot pathogens.
- Helps suppress club root severity as part of an integrated management program.
- Improves seedling establishment.
- Enhances nutrient and water uptake.
- Encourages healthy vegetative growth.
- Produces larger, denser, and more compact curds.
- Improves curd weight, whiteness, and uniformity.
- Enhances shelf life and post-harvest quality.
- Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Supports sustainable and organic cauliflower cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting cauliflower, including:
- Damping-off
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Club Root (Plasmodiophora brassicae) (suppression as part of integrated management)
- Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. conglutinans)
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Seedling Blight
- Stem Base Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Club root is caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, a soil-borne protist rather than a true fungus. Trichoderma helps reduce disease pressure and improve root health but should be integrated with crop rotation, liming to maintain suitable soil pH, resistant cultivars where available, and good drainage. Foliar diseases such as Alternaria leaf spot, downy mildew, black rot, and bacterial soft rot require additional integrated disease management.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects cauliflower plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful soil pathogens for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes susceptible fungal pathogens through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root development and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological activities provide season-long protection while promoting vigorous plant growth and high-quality curd production.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat cauliflower seeds with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.
Seedling Root Dip
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake before transplanting.
Bed or Furrow Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost uniformly in nursery beds or planting furrows before transplanting.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
