Trichoderma for Cashew: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Collar Rot Control & Higher Nut Yield
Share
Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is one of the world's leading plantation and export crops, cultivated for premium-quality cashew kernels, cashew apples, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), food processing, and industrial applications. High-yield cashew production depends on healthy feeder roots, vigorous canopy growth, efficient nutrient uptake, abundant flowering, and proper nut development. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, collar rot, stem base rot, damping-off, and nursery root diseases can reduce tree vigor, flowering, nut retention, and overall orchard productivity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects cashew roots against harmful pathogens while improving soil microbial activity and stimulating vigorous feeder root development. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy tree growth throughout the production cycle.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide only temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial ecosystem around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable cashew cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Cashew
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses root rot and collar rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances tree vigor and canopy development.
- Encourages healthy flowering and panicle formation.
- Improves fruit set and reduces premature nut drop.
- Produces larger and heavier nuts.
- Improves kernel filling, kernel size, and shell quality.
- Enhances kernel recovery and export quality.
- Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends orchard productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic cashew cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting cashew, including:
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Stem Base Rot
- Phytophthora Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Nursery Root Diseases
- Seedling Damping-off
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar and reproductive diseases such as anthracnose, powdery mildew, leaf spot, and inflorescence blight require integrated disease management practices.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects cashew trees through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous tree growth and improved nut production.
Recommended Application
Nursery Application
Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings or grafts.
Root Dip Before Planting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling or graft roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.
Basin Application
Mix 100–200 g of Trichoderma powder per mature tree with 10–20 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or neem cake and apply uniformly around the tree basin. Irrigate immediately after application.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed thoroughly with 100–200 kg of FYM or compost around the orchard root zone 2–3 times annually, preferably before the monsoon and after harvest.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose during active growth.
