Banana is an important fruit crop cultivated under the warm, humid and high-rainfall conditions of Goa. Because banana develops an extensive root system within the upper soil profile, maintaining good drainage, organic matter, balanced nutrition and a biologically active rhizosphere is important for healthy crop management.
Trichoderma is a group of beneficial fungi widely used in agriculture for biological soil and root-zone management. Species such as Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma harzianum and Trichoderma asperellum can be incorporated into preventive and integrated banana root-health programs.
Under favorable conditions, Trichoderma can establish around organic matter and the banana rhizosphere. Beneficial Trichoderma populations compete within the soil microbial environment and may interact antagonistically with certain soil-borne fungal pathogens.
For banana cultivation, Trichoderma should generally be directed toward the active root zone. Soil application, root-zone drenching or other approved application methods may be selected according to the formulation, crop stage and product-label recommendations.
Trichoderma may also be incorporated with well-decomposed farmyard manure or compost before soil application where appropriate. Organic matter, adequate moisture and suitable soil aeration can help provide favorable conditions for beneficial microbial establishment.
Banana fields under heavy rainfall can experience periods of excessive soil moisture. Biological products should therefore be combined with appropriate drainage and irrigation management, because persistent waterlogging can negatively affect root health regardless of microbial application.
Preventive establishment is an important principle in microbial root-zone management. Incorporating Trichoderma into the crop-management program before severe root deterioration develops can provide a more practical biological strategy than depending exclusively on corrective applications after advanced symptoms appear.
Chemical compatibility should also be considered. Because Trichoderma itself is a beneficial fungus, some fungicides can adversely affect its viability. Avoid indiscriminate tank mixing and follow appropriate compatibility information and application intervals.
A broader banana microbial program can integrate NPK consortium, Azotobacter, PSB and KMB for nutrient-management objectives, while suitable microbial bionematicides and biopesticides can be selected separately where specific nematode or insect-management requirements have been identified.
Peak Laboratories supplies Trichoderma in liquid, wettable powder, talc-based and water-soluble formulations for banana farmers, commercial plantations, agricultural dealers, distributors, institutional buyers and bulk requirements.
