Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Root Rot Control

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Root Rot Control

Root rot is one of the most damaging soil-borne diseases in mango orchards, reducing root function, weakening tree growth, and significantly affecting fruit yield and orchard longevity. The disease is commonly associated with fungal pathogens such as Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Phytophthora, which attack feeder roots and reduce the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients. Early symptoms include yellowing leaves, poor vegetative growth, branch dieback, reduced flowering, fruit drop, and gradual decline of the entire tree. Streptomyces lydicus is an effective biological biofungicide that supports natural root protection by creating a beneficial microbial environment in the rhizosphere.

After application through soil drenching, drip irrigation, or fertigation, Streptomyces lydicus actively colonizes the root zone where disease pressure is highest. It competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root surfaces while producing natural antimicrobial compounds that help suppress several soil-borne pathogens. This biological competition limits pathogen establishment and encourages the development of a balanced soil microbial ecosystem that supports healthy root growth.

Healthy roots are the foundation of productive mango orchards. By improving root development and nutrient uptake, Streptomyces lydicus enables mango trees to absorb essential minerals and moisture more efficiently. Strong root systems produce healthier canopies, vigorous shoot growth, better flowering, improved fruit set, and enhanced fruit quality. Trees with healthy roots are also more resilient to drought stress, transplant shock, and adverse environmental conditions, making them more productive throughout their lifespan.

For maximum effectiveness, Streptomyces lydicus should be incorporated into a complete Integrated Disease Management (IDM) program. Good drainage, proper irrigation scheduling, orchard sanitation, balanced fertilization, and regular monitoring of soil health all contribute to effective root rot management. The biofungicide is highly compatible with beneficial microorganisms such as Trichoderma, Bacillus spp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Paecilomyces lilacinus, and mycorrhizal fungi, creating a diverse microbial community that continuously protects the root zone and enhances soil fertility.

Commercial mango growers increasingly prefer Streptomyces lydicus because it offers sustainable, residue-free, and environmentally friendly disease management. Its ability to naturally suppress harmful soil fungi while improving root health makes it an excellent biological solution for conventional farming, organic production, and export-oriented mango cultivation. Regular applications help maintain vigorous trees, increase orchard productivity, improve fruit quality, and reduce dependence on repeated chemical fungicide applications.
