Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Root Growth
Share
A strong and well-developed root system is the foundation of a productive mango orchard. Roots are responsible for absorbing water, essential nutrients, and minerals that support every stage of plant growth, from vegetative development to flowering and fruit production. When root growth is restricted by poor soil biology or soil-borne pathogens, mango trees become less efficient in utilizing fertilizers and more vulnerable to environmental stress. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium and biological biofungicide that promotes vigorous root growth while naturally protecting the root zone from harmful fungal pathogens.
Following application through soil drenching, fertigation, or drip irrigation, Streptomyces lydicus rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere surrounding feeder roots. It competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root colonization sites while producing naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds that suppress important soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. This biological protection allows feeder roots to expand freely without excessive disease pressure.
Healthy feeder roots continuously absorb nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, and other micronutrients essential for vigorous tree development. As root growth improves, mango trees develop stronger trunks, healthier branches, greener foliage, improved flowering, better fruit set, and larger fruits. A well-developed root system also increases tolerance to drought, temporary flooding, nutrient stress, and transplant shock, helping maintain stable orchard productivity under varying environmental conditions.
For maximum root development, Streptomyces lydicus should be integrated with organic matter and complementary beneficial microorganisms. It performs exceptionally well with Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, and Paecilomyces lilacinus. Together these beneficial microbes improve soil biology, enhance nutrient cycling, stimulate feeder root formation, and create a resilient rhizosphere that supports long-term orchard health.
Commercial mango growers increasingly use Streptomyces lydicus as a preventive biological solution because healthy roots directly influence yield, fruit quality, fertilizer efficiency, and orchard longevity. By continuously protecting the root zone and encouraging vigorous root development, Streptomyces lydicus helps growers achieve sustainable production, healthier trees, and improved economic returns while reducing dependence on repeated chemical fungicide applications.
