Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Nursery Plants

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Nursery Plants

Producing healthy nursery plants is the first step toward establishing a productive mango orchard. Strong seedlings with well-developed root systems transplant more successfully, recover faster after planting, and perform better throughout their productive life. Because young nursery plants are highly susceptible to soil-borne pathogens, maintaining a biologically active growing medium is essential. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial actinobacterium and biological biofungicide that helps protect nursery plants by colonizing the root zone and supporting healthy rhizosphere development.

During nursery production, young mango seedlings and grafted plants continuously develop fine feeder roots that are vulnerable to pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. When applied through root-zone drenching or irrigation, Streptomyces lydicus establishes around these developing roots, competing with harmful fungi for nutrients and colonization sites while producing naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds that help reduce disease pressure in the nursery media.

Healthy nursery roots absorb water and essential nutrients more efficiently, supporting vigorous shoot growth, healthy leaf development, stronger stem formation, and improved plant uniformity. Plants with active root systems also tolerate transplanting stress more effectively and establish faster after field planting. Although Streptomyces lydicus is not a growth hormone, maintaining a healthy root environment contributes significantly to overall nursery plant quality.

For best nursery performance, Streptomyces lydicus should be used together with good nursery management practices, including clean propagation media, quality irrigation water, proper drainage, sanitation, balanced fertilization, and adequate spacing between plants. It is highly compatible with Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, compost, vermicompost, and other beneficial microbial inoculants that support early root development.

Commercial nurseries increasingly incorporate biological microorganisms into their propagation programs because healthy seedlings establish more rapidly in orchards and often require fewer interventions during early growth. By improving root health, strengthening the rhizosphere, enhancing nutrient uptake, and naturally suppressing soil-borne pathogens, Streptomyces lydicus contributes to the production of vigorous, disease-resilient mango nursery plants suitable for conventional, integrated, organic, and regenerative farming systems.
