Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Fusarium Management

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Fusarium Management

Fusarium species are common soil-borne fungi that can survive in agricultural soils for long periods and infect mango roots under favorable conditions. Root infections may reduce feeder root activity, interfere with water and nutrient absorption, weaken tree vigor, and ultimately affect flowering, fruit set, and yield. Effective Fusarium management requires an integrated approach that combines healthy soil management, proper irrigation, balanced nutrition, sanitation, and biological disease suppression. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium and biological biofungicide that contributes to these preventive management practices by promoting a healthy and competitive rhizosphere.

After application through soil drenching, fertigation, or drip irrigation, Streptomyces lydicus establishes itself around mango feeder roots. It competes with Fusarium and other soil-borne fungi for nutrients and colonization sites while producing naturally occurring antimicrobial metabolites that help suppress important pathogens including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, and Phytophthora. This biological activity helps maintain a healthier microbial balance around the root zone and supports normal root development.

Healthy feeder roots improve the uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, and other essential nutrients required for vigorous tree growth. Improved nutrient absorption supports healthy foliage, stronger vegetative growth, balanced flowering, better fruit retention, improved fruit size, and enhanced fruit quality. Trees with vigorous root systems are also better able to tolerate drought, excessive rainfall, and temporary nutrient stress, helping maintain consistent orchard performance throughout the season.

For maximum effectiveness, Streptomyces lydicus should be used as one component of a comprehensive integrated disease management program. It performs exceptionally well alongside Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, compost, vermicompost, and other organic soil amendments. Maintaining good drainage, avoiding waterlogging, and practicing orchard sanitation further improve disease management outcomes.

Commercial mango growers increasingly include Streptomyces lydicus in preventive orchard health programs because healthy roots are essential for sustainable production. By strengthening the rhizosphere, helping suppress soil-borne pathogens, improving nutrient efficiency, and supporting long-term soil biology, Streptomyces lydicus contributes to healthier orchards, higher yields, and improved fruit quality. It is suitable for conventional, integrated, organic, and regenerative mango production systems.
