Rhizobium for Pigeon Pea Cultivation in Jharkhand | Nitrogen-Fixing Biofertilizer Supplier India

Pigeon pea, commonly known as arhar or tur, is an important pulse crop cultivated in different agricultural regions of Jharkhand. As a leguminous crop, pigeon pea can establish a beneficial symbiotic association with compatible Rhizobium bacteria.

Rhizobium is an important microbial biofertilizer for pigeon pea because compatible strains can colonize the root system and contribute to the formation of root nodules, where biological nitrogen fixation can occur under suitable conditions.

The use of a suitable Rhizobium inoculant can therefore form an important component of an Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) program for pigeon pea.

What is Rhizobium?

Rhizobium refers to beneficial bacteria capable of establishing symbiotic associations with compatible leguminous plants.

After successful interaction with pigeon pea roots, compatible bacteria can participate in the development of root nodules.

Inside functional nodules, the plant and bacteria form a biological system capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen into biologically useful nitrogen compounds.

This process is known as symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation.

Importance of Strain Compatibility

Rhizobium–legume associations show host specificity.

A Rhizobium strain used for one legume should not automatically be assumed to perform equally well with pigeon pea.

For this reason, a Rhizobium inoculant suitable for pigeon pea should be selected.

Correct strain selection is an important factor influencing successful root association, nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation.

Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Pigeon Pea

Nitrogen is required for proteins, enzymes, chlorophyll and many other plant processes.

When effective nodulation develops, the pigeon pea–Rhizobium association can contribute to the crop's nitrogen economy through biological nitrogen fixation.

However, Rhizobium should be incorporated into a complete soil-fertility program.

Other nutrients, particularly phosphorus, potassium and essential micronutrients, can influence crop development and the functioning of the root system.

Compatibility with Chemical Seed Treatments

Pigeon pea seed may sometimes receive fungicidal or other chemical treatments before sowing.

Rhizobium is a living bacterium, and direct contact with certain antimicrobial chemicals can reduce bacterial survival.

Where chemical and microbial seed treatments are both required, farmers should follow suitable compatibility guidance, treatment sequence and recommended application intervals.

Rhizobium + PSB for Pigeon Pea

Rhizobium and PSB provide complementary biological functions.

Rhizobium: supports symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation through compatible root nodulation.

PSB: supports biological mobilization of certain less-available forms of phosphorus.

This combination can be incorporated into a broader nutrient-management strategy alongside soil-test-based fertilizer recommendations.

Integrated Pigeon Pea Management

A successful Rhizobium program should be integrated with quality seed, compatible Rhizobium strain selection, correct seed inoculation, soil testing, phosphorus and potassium management, organic matter, moisture conservation, drainage, crop rotation and appropriate pest and disease management.

Peak Laboratories manufactures and supplies Rhizobium microbial biofertilizer for pigeon pea and other compatible leguminous crops, together with PSB, KMB and other beneficial agricultural microorganisms.

Products are available for pigeon pea farmers, arhar growers, tur growers, FPOs, farmer groups, agricultural dealers, distributors, commercial farms, institutional buyers and bulk buyers throughout Jharkhand and India.
