Pseudomonas fluorescens for Coconut – Control Root Rot, Stem Bleeding & Bud Rot

Your coconut palms are the pride of Kollam. But hidden diseases – root rot (Ganoderma), stem bleeding (Thielaviopsis paradoxa), and bud rot (Phytophthora) – are silent killers. Once the fungus enters the wood, chemical treatments are useless. The first visible symptom is yellowing of fronds, followed by dark liquid oozing from the trunk and eventual palm death.

Pseudomonas fluorescens is the proven, organic solution.

What the research says: Research has shown that Pseudomonas fluorescens fared well against these coconut pathogens, with the percent inhibition of mycelial growth ranging from 68.32 to 69.38%. The KAU‑distributed strain PN026 is also part of integrated disease management recommendations for coconut.

How to apply Pseudomonas fluorescens on coconut:

For adult palms (preventive and curative for root rot and stem bleeding):

  • Take 200‑250g of Bactostore’s Pseudomonas fluorescens powder (or 200‑250 ml liquid)

  • Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or cow dung

  • Apply in a 1.5‑2 metre basin around the palm, 15‑20 cm from the trunk

  • Cover lightly with soil

  • Apply twice a year – pre‑monsoon (April‑May) and post‑monsoon (September‑October)

For active stem bleeding (emergency treatment):

  • Scrape the bleeding area to remove loose material

  • Make a paste of 100g Pseudomonas powder in 500 ml water

  • Apply the paste on the wound and cover with mud

  • Repeat after 15 days

For new plantings:

  • Mix 100g of powder (or 100 ml liquid) per pit with 10‑15 kg FYM before planting the seedling

Why this works: P. fluorescens produces antibiotics and mycolytic enzymes that directly inhibit the growth of Thielaviopsis paradoxa (stem bleeding pathogen) and Phytophthora palmivora (bud rot pathogen). It also colonises the root zone, creating a protective barrier.

Farmer testimonial: “My coconut garden had severe stem bleeding. After using Bactostore Pseudomonas fluorescens paste on the wound and applying it with FYM in the basin, the bleeding stopped, and my palm recovered.” – Vijayan, Kollam.
