Preventing Cauliflower Curd Rot, Downy Mildew, and Black Rot with Bacillus subtilis

Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea var. botrytis) cultivation is sensitive to moisture and humidity, which trigger curd discoloration and decay caused by Bacterial Curd Rot (Erwinia / Pseudomonas spp.), Black Rot (Xanthomonas campestris), and Downy Mildew (Hyaloperonospora brassicae). Curd rot is especially damaging during head buttoning, turning white curds into soft, brown, unmarketable heads. Soil drenching and regular foliar spraying with Bacillus subtilis establish an active bio-protective layer over developing curds and jacket leaves. The bacteria secrete cyclic lipopeptides (surfactin, iturin, fengycin) and natural antibacterial metabolites that halt bacterial proliferation and prevent fungal spore germination.

Beyond disease control, Bacillus subtilis acts as a valuable plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in high-value brassica crops. It solubilizes fixed soil phosphorus, secretes siderophores for iron mobilization, and produces natural growth regulators that encourage strong jacket leaf coverage (blanching) and feeder root extension. Enhanced root health supports uniform button initiation, increases curd size and density, and preserves pure white curd color. Regular application ensures clean, residue-free cauliflower heads suitable for fresh and frozen processing markets.

Importance of Bacillus subtilis in Cauliflower Cultivation

Cauliflower is a nutrient-demanding crop requiring continuous nutrient and water uptake to produce compact, white, marketable curds. Healthy roots are essential for vigorous leaf growth and successful curd initiation.

Bacillus subtilis rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere, competing with disease-causing fungi and bacteria for nutrients and space. It also produces natural antimicrobial compounds that suppress harmful pathogens while encouraging beneficial microbial populations.

Healthy roots improve nutrient absorption, support vigorous foliage growth, and promote uniform curd development.
