Metarhizium anisopliae for Rice – Control Paddy Root Weevil & Termites

Paddy root weevil larvae feed on rice roots, causing stunted growth, yellowing, and reduced tillering. Termites can also attack young rice plants, especially in dry conditions. In Kuttanad’s unique waterlogged fields, these pests can cause significant yield losses.

Metarhizium anisopliae is a natural, effective solution for rice soil pests.

The fungus thrives in moist soil conditions – perfect for Alappuzha’s paddy fields. It infects weevil larvae and termites through contact, killing them within days. It also persists in the soil, providing ongoing protection.

How to apply Metarhizium for paddy (per acre):

Seed treatment (most effective method):

  • Take 100g of Bactostore’s Metarhizium powder (or 100 ml liquid)

  • Mix with enough water to coat 10 kg of paddy seeds

  • Stir until seeds are evenly coated

  • Shade dry for 30 minutes before sowing

Soil application (for fields with known pest history):

  • Mix 1‑2 kg of Metarhizium powder (or 1‑2 litres liquid) with 100‑200 kg well‑decomposed FYM

  • Broadcast evenly during the last ploughing and incorporate into the soil

For termite infestation during crop growth:

  • Mix 1‑2 litres of Metarhizium liquid in 200 litres of water

  • Drench the affected areas (10‑15 litres per square metre)

Why this works for Kuttanad: Metarhizium thrives in high humidity and moist soil – exactly the conditions in your paddy fields. It is safe for fish and other aquatic life, unlike chemical pesticides.
