Litchi (Lychee) Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Fruit Yield, Sweetness and Export Quality

Litchi (Litchi chinensis), commonly known as Lychee, is a premium subtropical fruit crop valued for its attractive red peel, juicy aril, excellent sweetness and export potential. It is widely cultivated for fresh consumption, juice, pulp, frozen products and processed foods. To obtain vigorous tree growth, profuse flowering, high fruit set, larger fruits, improved peel color, higher Total Soluble Solids (°Brix) and extended shelf life, integrated biological crop management using biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides is highly effective. Beneficial microorganisms improve nutrient availability, strengthen root systems, naturally suppress diseases and insect pests, and enhance long-term soil fertility.

Beneficial microbes colonize the rhizosphere and continuously improve nutrient cycling, allowing trees to develop healthy canopies, strong feeder roots and consistent flowering while supporting regular fruit production.

Azotobacter fixes atmospheric nitrogen and provides biologically available nitrogen required for healthy vegetative growth and flower panicle development. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert insoluble phosphorus into plant-available forms, promoting stronger roots, improved flowering and higher fruit retention. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) mobilize potassium required for larger fruit size, better sweetness (°Brix), vibrant peel color, improved pulp quality and enhanced shelf life. NPK Microbial Consortia provide continuous nutrient availability throughout the crop cycle, ensuring balanced tree nutrition.

Micronutrient-solubilizing microorganisms further improve orchard performance. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria enhance chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activity and flower development while reducing zinc deficiency. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria improve sulphur availability for protein synthesis, fruit aroma and quality. Mycorrhiza (AMF) significantly increase phosphorus uptake, water absorption and drought tolerance through an expanded root system. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues, improve tolerance to heat and water stress and help reduce fruit cracking.

Litchi orchards are susceptible to diseases including anthracnose, downy blight, fruit rot, leaf blight, algal leaf spot, stem canker, root rot and dieback. These diseases reduce flowering, fruit quality and overall orchard productivity.

Beneficial microorganisms provide effective biological disease management. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne pathogens such as Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Phytophthora while stimulating root development. Pseudomonas fluorescens acts as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), suppressing pathogens and inducing systemic resistance. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial metabolites that help control fungal and bacterial diseases. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus improve rhizosphere health and strengthen the orchard's biological defense system.

Major insect pests include lychee fruit borer, fruit borer, leaf roller, bark-eating caterpillar, aphids, mealybugs, scales, termites, white grubs and root-knot nematodes. These pests damage leaves, flowers, developing fruits and roots, significantly reducing yield and fruit quality.

Beauveria bassiana effectively suppresses fruit borers, bark-eating caterpillars, aphids and mealybugs. Lecanicillium lecanii provides excellent biological control of aphids, mealybugs, scales and other soft-bodied insects. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls caterpillars and fruit-boring larvae. Metarhizium anisopliae suppresses termites and white grubs. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia effectively reduce root-knot nematode populations, ensuring healthy feeder roots and efficient nutrient uptake.

Applying microbial products through basin application, organic manure enrichment, drip irrigation and periodic soil drenching enables beneficial microorganisms to establish throughout the root zone. When integrated with balanced irrigation, pruning and orchard management, biological crop management improves nutrient-use efficiency, fruit quality and sustainable litchi production.
