How to Save Your Coconut Palms from Root Rot and Stem Bleeding Using Trichoderma
Share
You’ve seen it happen – a mature coconut palm suddenly wilts, its fronds turn yellow, and dark liquid oozes from the trunk. Soon, the palm is dead. That’s Ganoderma root rot and stem bleeding – two of the most feared coconut diseases in Alappuzha. Once the fungus enters the wood, chemical treatments are useless.
But there is a proven, organic rescue: Trichoderma.
What the research says:
The Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) and Kerala Agricultural University have extensively studied Trichoderma for coconut disease management.
-
A talc‑based formulation of Trichoderma harzianum applied with neem cake reduced the disease index from 28.44 to 4.23 over three years.
-
Trichoderma viride applied in coconut basins can survive for more than a year, providing long‑term protection.
How to apply (step by step):
For an adult coconut palm (preventive and curative):
-
Take 200‑250g of Bactostore’s Trichoderma powder (or 200‑250 ml of liquid).
-
Mix with 20‑25 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or cow dung.
-
Apply this mixture in a 1.5‑2 metre basin around the palm, 15‑20 cm from the trunk.
-
Cover lightly with soil.
-
Apply twice a year – pre‑monsoon (April‑May) and post‑monsoon (September‑October).
For active stem bleeding:
-
Scrape the bleeding area to remove loose material.
-
Make a paste of 100g Trichoderma powder in 500 ml water.
-
Apply the paste on the wound and cover with mud. Repeat after 15 days.
Results farmers are seeing:
“My coconut garden in Edathua had severe stem bleeding. I used Bactostore Trichoderma powder with FYM in the basin. The bleeding stopped, and the palm recovered. My MOP usage has also gone down.” – Sathyan, Edathua.
