Cucumber Nematode Control Using Biological Solutions

Cucumber Nematode Control Using Biological Solutions

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a high-value vegetable crop cultivated in open fields, net houses, and polyhouses. Due to its tender root system and continuous cultivation, cucumber is highly susceptible to Root-knot Nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), making nematodes one of the most important soil-borne pests limiting production. Severe infestations can reduce yields by 30–70%, particularly in sandy soils and protected cultivation systems.

Root-knot nematodes penetrate young cucumber roots and induce the formation of large galls that restrict water and nutrient uptake. Damaged roots are less efficient at supporting vigorous vine growth, flowering, and fruit development. Nematode injury also increases susceptibility to fungal pathogens such as Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium spp., Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotium rolfsii, often resulting in disease complexes.

The major nematodes affecting cucumber include Root-knot Nematodes (Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica), Lesion Nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.), and Reniform Nematodes (Rotylenchulus reniformis).

Biological nematode management is an effective, environmentally friendly strategy that suppresses nematodes while improving soil health and plant vigor.

Paecilomyces lilacinus parasitizes nematode eggs and females, reducing nematode reproduction.

Pochonia chlamydosporia attacks nematode eggs and establishes around cucumber roots for continuous suppression.

Trichoderma spp. promote healthy root development, suppress soil-borne fungal diseases, improve nutrient availability, and enhance plant vigor.

Pseudomonas spp. colonize the rhizosphere, produce beneficial metabolites, and stimulate natural plant defenses against soil-borne stresses.

Bacillus spp. improve nutrient uptake, produce bioactive compounds, promote root growth, and contribute to biological suppression of nematodes.

A biological consortium combining these microorganisms improves cucumber root health, fruit quality, flowering, and yield while supporting long-term soil fertility and sustainable production.
