Cotton Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Boll Yield, Fibre Quality and Sustainable Cotton Farming

Cotton Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Boll Yield, Fibre Quality and Sustainable Cotton Farming

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum, Gossypium arboreum and Gossypium barbadense) is one of India's most important commercial fibre crops and a major contributor to the textile industry. Major cotton-producing states include Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. High cotton productivity depends on vigorous root systems, balanced nutrition, strong vegetative growth, efficient flowering, better boll retention, superior fibre development and effective disease and pest management. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides into cotton cultivation improves nutrient availability, enhances soil fertility and naturally suppresses diseases and insect pests while ensuring sustainable crop productivity.

Beneficial microorganisms colonize the rhizosphere around cotton roots, increasing soil biological activity, nutrient cycling and water-use efficiency. Healthy root systems support vigorous plant growth, increased fruiting branches, improved square retention and better boll development throughout the crop cycle.

Azotobacter fixes atmospheric nitrogen and supplies biologically available nitrogen for continuous vegetative growth and boll formation. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert unavailable phosphorus into plant-available forms, promoting strong root development, flowering and early boll setting. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) improve potassium availability, enhancing boll size, lint development, fibre strength, fibre length and drought tolerance. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout the growing season, resulting in improved boll weight and higher seed cotton yield.

Micronutrient-solubilizing microorganisms further improve crop performance. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria enhance chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activity and photosynthetic efficiency. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria improve sulphur availability for protein synthesis, oil formation in cottonseed and metabolic functions. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expand the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake, moisture absorption and stress tolerance. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues, reduce lodging, improve drought tolerance and increase resistance against environmental stress.

Cotton is affected by several economically important diseases including Fusarium Wilt, Verticillium Wilt, Bacterial Blight, Alternaria Leaf Spot, Grey Mildew, Root Rot, Damping-off, Anthracnose and Boll Rot. These diseases reduce plant population, boll retention, fibre quality and overall yield.

Beneficial microorganisms provide effective biological disease management. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne pathogens including Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium and Sclerotium while promoting vigorous root growth. Pseudomonas fluorescens acts as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), suppressing pathogens and inducing systemic resistance. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds that inhibit fungal and bacterial pathogens. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus improve rhizosphere biodiversity and provide long-term biological disease suppression.

Major insect pests include Pink Bollworm, American Bollworm, Spotted Bollworm, Tobacco Caterpillar, Whitefly, Aphids, Jassids, Thrips, Mealybugs, Termites, White Grubs and Root-knot Nematodes. These pests reduce boll retention, damage fibre quality and significantly decrease marketable yield.

Beauveria bassiana effectively controls bollworms, whiteflies, mealybugs and other insect pests. Lecanicillium lecanii provides excellent biological control of aphids, whiteflies, jassids, thrips and mealybugs. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls bollworms and caterpillar larvae. Metarhizium anisopliae suppresses termites, white grubs and soil-dwelling beetle larvae. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia reduce root-knot nematode populations, protecting feeder roots and improving nutrient uptake.

Applying microbial products through seed treatment, soil application, drip irrigation, compost enrichment and periodic root-zone drenching establishes beneficial microbial populations throughout the crop root zone. Combined with balanced fertilization, irrigation, integrated nutrient management and proper crop protection practices, biological crop management significantly improves nutrient-use efficiency, boll development and fibre quality.
