Citrus Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Fruit Yield, Juice Quality and Export Production

Citrus crops including orange, sweet orange, mandarin, kinnow, lemon, lime, grapefruit and pomelo are among the world's most valuable fruit crops for fresh markets, juice processing and exports. Producing healthy trees with abundant flowering, excellent fruit set, large fruits, high juice content and long shelf life requires balanced nutrition, healthy root systems and effective disease and pest management. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides provides a sustainable cultivation system that improves nutrient availability, strengthens tree health and naturally suppresses diseases and insect pests while improving long-term soil fertility.

Beneficial microorganisms colonize the citrus rhizosphere and continuously improve nutrient cycling, promoting vigorous root growth, healthy canopy development, consistent flowering and superior fruit production.

Azotobacter fixes atmospheric nitrogen and supplies biologically available nitrogen required for healthy vegetative growth and flowering. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert insoluble phosphorus into plant-available forms, promoting stronger root systems, better flowering and improved fruit set. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) enhance potassium availability, resulting in larger fruits, improved juice content, higher sweetness (°Brix), stronger peel quality and extended shelf life. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout the growing season.

Micronutrient-solubilizing microorganisms further improve orchard productivity. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria improve chlorophyll synthesis, enzyme activity and photosynthesis while helping reduce zinc deficiency symptoms common in citrus orchards. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria improve sulphur availability for protein synthesis, fruit quality and aroma. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expands the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake, water absorption and drought tolerance. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues, improve tolerance to drought, salinity and heat stress while enhancing fruit firmness and peel strength.

Citrus is susceptible to diseases including citrus canker, gummosis (Phytophthora), root rot, anthracnose, melanose, greasy spot, citrus scab and Alternaria brown spot. Although Citrus Greening (HLB) cannot be controlled directly by microbial products, maintaining healthy roots and improving tree vigor can help reduce overall stress and improve orchard productivity.

Beneficial microorganisms naturally suppress disease-causing pathogens while improving plant immunity. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum effectively suppress Phytophthora, Fusarium and other soil-borne pathogens while promoting vigorous root development. Pseudomonas fluorescens functions as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), reducing disease incidence and inducing systemic resistance. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds effective against fungal and bacterial pathogens. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus further improve rhizosphere health and provide long-term biological disease suppression.

Major insect pests include citrus psylla, citrus leaf miner, aphids, thrips, mealybugs, scale insects, fruit flies, termites, white grubs and citrus nematodes. These pests reduce tree vigor, transmit diseases and lower fruit quality.

Beauveria bassiana effectively suppresses citrus psylla, leaf miners, mealybugs and fruit flies. Lecanicillium lecanii provides excellent biological control of aphids, psylla, mealybugs, scale insects and whiteflies. Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls leaf-feeding caterpillars. Metarhizium anisopliae effectively manages termites and white grubs. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia suppress citrus nematodes and root-knot nematodes, promoting healthy feeder roots and efficient nutrient uptake.

Applying microbial products through basin application, drip irrigation, farmyard manure enrichment and periodic root-zone drenching enables beneficial microorganisms to establish around the root system. Combined with balanced fertilization, irrigation and canopy management, biological crop management improves nutrient-use efficiency, enhances flowering and supports sustainable citrus production.
