Bacillus thuringiensis for Caterpillar Control

How Does Bt Work?

  • Targets Only the Pest: Bt contains natural bacteria that, when eaten by baby caterpillars, releases a toxin that attacks only their stomach lining. It is harmless to people, animals, bees, and birds.

  • Stops Feeding Fast: Once a caterpillar eats Bt, it stops eating within just 30 minutes to a few hours. This stops the damage to your crop immediately.

  • Acts as a Slow Killer: The Bt crystals break down the caterpillar's stomach, leading to its death from starvation and infection within 1 to 5 days.

🐛 Which Caterpillars Does It Control?

Bt is a specialist, and it's smart to pick the right one for the job!

  • Bt kurstaki (Btk) for Leaf-eaters: This is your go-to for most crop-eating caterpillars, including:

    • Cabbage loopers, cabbage worms, and diamondback moths.

    • Tomato hornworms, fruit borers, and cutworms.

    • Cotton bollworms, gypsy moths, and leafrollers.

  • Bt aizawai (Bta) for Resistant Pests: Favor this specific strain to manage diamondback moth populations that have become resistant to other Bt varieties.

  • Bt israelensis (Bti) for Mosquitos: A different strain that works on fungus gnats and mosquitoes. Leave this for water-based pests, not your foliage.

🛠️ How to Apply Bt for Best Results

  • Spray Early: Apply Bt when you first see small, young caterpillars. They are much more sensitive to the toxin than larger ones.

  • Cover All Leaves Thoroughly: Since it must be eaten to work, ensure you spray both the top and bottom of leaves to coat the entire plant. Use a high-volume sprayer for good coverage.

  • Use the Right Dosage: Always read your product's label. A common starting point is 5-10 grams of powder or 10 ml of liquid per liter of water for foliar sprays.

  • Establish a Spray Schedule: Reapply every 5-7 days during heavy pest pressure, and always reapply after a heavy rain, as it washes off plant surfaces.

⚠️ Important Points to Remember

  • Bt is a Preventative: It is most effective as a pre-emptive strike. Think of it as a shield, not a cure for severe infestations.

  • It is Extremely Safe: Bt is OMRI-listed for organic farming and has a Zero-day Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) meaning you can spray it even on the day of harvest!.

  • Do Not Mix with Chemicals: Bt is a living bacterium. Do not mix it with chemical fertilizers or bactericidal fungicides, as these can kill the bacteria.
