Verticillium lecanii for Coconut – Control Whiteflies, Mealybugs & Scale Insects
ಹಂಚಿ
Your coconut palms are the pride of Kannur. But in recent years, invasive sucking pests have become a serious threat. The rugose spiraling whitefly (RSW) – first reported in India in 2016‑2017 – has spread across Kerala. These tiny white insects suck sap from under the leaves, causing yellowing, wilting, and reduced nut yield. In severe infestations, they produce honeydew that leads to sooty mould growth, further reducing photosynthesis. Mealybugs and scale insects are also common, colonizing fronds and tender leaves, and sometimes spreading to the developing nuts.
Chemical pesticides give only temporary relief, harm beneficial insects, and leave residues that can affect your coconuts' market value. Worse, whiteflies can develop resistance to chemicals quickly.
Verticillium lecanii is the natural, proven solution.
Research has demonstrated that Verticillium lecanii is highly effective against the coconut whitefly, with lethal effects appearing from day eight to day 12. The fungus infects all stages of whiteflies – eggs, nymphs, and adults. It also effectively controls mealybugs and scale insects.
How does Verticillium lecanii work?
When you spray the fungus on your coconut fronds, the microscopic spores land on the pests. The spores germinate and produce a germ tube that penetrates the insect's cuticle (outer shell). Once inside, the fungus grows rapidly, consuming the insect from within and producing toxins (bassianolide, dipicolinic acid). The insect stops feeding within 24‑48 hours and dies completely within 3‑7 days. After death, white fuzzy mold appears on the dead insect – earning Verticillium the name "white halo fungus." The mold produces new spores that can infect nearby pests.
How to apply Verticillium lecanii on coconut (Bactostore method):
Foliar spray on fronds (for whiteflies, mealybugs, scale insects):
-
For liquid formulation: Mix 2‑5 ml of Bactostore's Verticillium lecanii liquid in 1 litre of water. For 1 acre, use 1‑2 litres of liquid diluted in 200‑400 litres of water.
-
For powder formulation: Mix 5‑10g of Bactostore's Verticillium powder in 1 litre of water. For 1 acre, use 1‑2 kg of powder diluted in 200‑400 litres of water.
-
For better results, add 2 kg jaggery (gur) – the sugar feeds the fungus, boosting spore germination.
-
Spray thoroughly on both sides of fronds, paying special attention to the underside of leaves where whiteflies and mealybugs hide.
-
Spray in early morning or late evening when UV rays are low and humidity is high.
-
Repeat every 15‑20 days during active infestation.
Soil application (for mealybugs and scale insects at the base of palms):
-
Take 20‑50g of Bactostore's Verticillium powder per palm
-
Mix with 1‑2 kg of well‑decomposed FYM or cow dung
-
Apply in the basin around the palm (15‑20 cm from the trunk) and cover with soil
-
Apply pre‑monsoon (April‑May) and again post‑monsoon (September‑October)
Important tips for Kannur coconut farmers:
-
Verticillium works best at 25‑30°C and high humidity (>70%) – perfect for Kannur's climate
-
Apply in early morning or late evening – UV rays kill the fungus
-
Do not mix with chemical fungicides – they will kill the beneficial fungus
-
Wait 7‑10 days after chemical fungicide use before applying Verticillium
-
For severe whitefly infestation, combine with yellow sticky traps
