Trichoderma for Pineapple: Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot, Heart Rot Control & Higher Fruit Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a high-value tropical fruit crop cultivated for fresh consumption, juice production, canning, food processing, and export. Commercial pineapple production depends on healthy roots, vigorous vegetative growth, efficient nutrient uptake, and proper fruit development. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as root rot, heart rot, stem rot, butt rot, and damping-off can significantly reduce plant vigor, fruit size, and plantation productivity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects pineapple roots against harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy plant growth throughout the crop cycle.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide only temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, delivering season-long biological protection while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable pineapple cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Pineapple
- Promotes vigorous root development.
- Suppresses root rot and heart rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances vegetative growth and leaf development.
- Improves plant establishment after planting.
- Encourages uniform flowering.
- Produces larger and heavier fruits.
- Improves fruit sweetness (°Brix), aroma, and pulp quality.
- Enhances fruit firmness and shelf life.
- Improves tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Increases plantation productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic pineapple cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting pineapple, including:
- Root Rot
- Heart Rot
- Butt Rot
- Stem Rot
- Phytophthora Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Damping-off
- Nursery Root Diseases
Note: Trichoderma primarily controls soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases and bacterial diseases such as bacterial heart rot should be managed through integrated crop management practices.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects pineapple plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological activities provide season-long disease protection while promoting healthy plant growth and premium fruit production.
Recommended Application
Sucker or Crown Treatment
Dip pineapple suckers, crowns, or slips in a suspension prepared with 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water for 20–30 minutes before planting.
Pit or Furrow Application
Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost and apply in planting pits or furrows.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100 kg of FYM or compost around the root zone during planting and at regular intervals during crop growth.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
