Trichoderma for Guava: Natural Biofungicide for Wilt Control, Root Rot Management & Higher Fruit Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
Guava (Psidium guajava) is one of the most profitable tropical fruit crops cultivated for fresh consumption, juice production, processing, and export. Healthy roots are essential for vigorous tree growth, efficient nutrient uptake, regular flowering, strong fruit retention, and premium fruit quality. One of the most destructive problems in guava orchards is Guava Wilt Complex, along with root rot, collar rot, and soil-borne fungal infections, which can gradually weaken trees and reduce orchard productivity.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects guava roots against harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous root growth and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy tree growth throughout the growing season.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root zone, delivering long-term biological protection while improving soil fertility and orchard sustainability.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Guava
- Promotes vigorous feeder root development.
- Suppresses guava wilt and root rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances tree vigor and canopy development.
- Encourages healthy flowering.
- Improves fruit set and reduces premature fruit drop.
- Produces larger, heavier, and more uniform fruits.
- Improves fruit sweetness (°Brix), flavour, and pulp quality.
- Enhances fruit firmness and shelf life.
- Improves tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Extends orchard productivity.
- Supports sustainable and organic guava cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting guava, including:
- Guava Wilt Complex
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Fusarium Wilt
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Stem Base Rot
- Seedling Root Diseases
- Nursery Damping-off
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Guava wilt is a complex disease involving multiple fungi and environmental factors. Trichoderma is highly effective as part of an integrated wilt management program. Foliar diseases such as anthracnose, algal leaf spot, and rust require additional disease management measures.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects guava trees through several biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the tree's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates feeder root formation and root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while improving tree health and fruit production.
Recommended Application
Nursery Application
Mix 2–5 g of Trichoderma powder per nursery bag with the potting mixture before planting seedlings.
Root Dip Before Planting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before planting.
Soil Application
Mix 50–100 g of Trichoderma powder per mature tree with 5–10 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, or organic compost. Apply around the tree's drip line and irrigate immediately.
Basin Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost around the basin during pre-flowering and after harvest for continuous rhizosphere protection.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
