Trichoderma for Garlic: Natural Biofungicide for White Rot, Basal Rot Control & Higher Bulb Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
Garlic (Allium sativum) is one of the world's most important spice and medicinal crops cultivated for fresh bulbs, dehydrated garlic, garlic powder, garlic paste, essential oils, pharmaceuticals, and export. High-quality garlic production depends on healthy roots, vigorous vegetative growth, efficient nutrient uptake, and proper bulb development. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as white rot, basal rot, root rot, damping-off, and Fusarium diseases can cause severe yield losses and poor bulb quality.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects garlic roots and bulbs against harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous root development and improving soil microbial activity. Species including Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and stimulate healthy crop growth throughout the growing season.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide temporary protection, Trichoderma establishes beneficial microbial populations around the root zone, providing long-lasting biological disease suppression while improving soil fertility and supporting sustainable garlic cultivation.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Garlic
- Promotes vigorous root development.
- Suppresses white rot and basal rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Enhances plant vigor and leaf growth.
- Encourages healthy bulb formation.
- Produces larger, heavier, and more uniform bulbs.
- Improves clove size and bulb filling.
- Enhances bulb firmness and storage life.
- Improves bulb quality for fresh market and export.
- Increases tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Improves beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Supports sustainable and organic garlic cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting garlic, including:
- White Rot (Sclerotium cepivorum)
- Basal Rot (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cepae)
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Fusarium Wilt
- Rhizoctonia Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Damping-off
- Seedling Root Diseases
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as purple blotch, Stemphylium blight, downy mildew, and rust require integrated crop management.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects garlic plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and space.
- Produces chitinase, glucanase, and cellulase enzymes that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites.
- Directly parasitizes disease-causing fungi.
- Activates induced systemic resistance (ISR).
- Stimulates feeder root development.
- Improves nutrient availability and soil microbial diversity.
Recommended Application
Clove Treatment
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip garlic cloves for 20–30 minutes, shade dry, and plant immediately.
Soil Application
Apply 2–4 kg of Trichoderma per acre mixed with 100 kg of FYM, vermicompost, or neem cake before planting and again 45–60 days after planting.
Furrow Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into planting furrows before sowing cloves.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation as recommended.
