Trichoderma for French Bean (Rajma): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Healthy Nodulation & Higher Pod Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), commonly known as Rajma or Common Bean, is a valuable pulse and vegetable crop cultivated for fresh green pods as well as dry edible beans. High productivity depends on healthy roots, efficient nutrient uptake, active nodulation, and protection against soil-borne fungal diseases. Root infections during the early growth stages often result in poor crop establishment, weak plants, reduced flowering, fewer pods, and lower grain quality.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects French bean roots from harmful pathogens while promoting vigorous root growth and improving soil microbial activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, and create a favorable environment for beneficial microorganisms, including Rhizobium phaseoli, improving nitrogen fixation and overall crop performance.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide short-term protection, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial population around the root system, delivering season-long disease suppression while enhancing soil fertility and crop vigor.
Benefits of Trichoderma in French Bean
- Improves seed germination and early crop establishment.
- Protects seedlings from damping-off and fungal infections.
- Promotes deeper and healthier root development.
- Suppresses root rot, collar rot, and stem base diseases.
- Enhances nodulation when used with compatible Rhizobium phaseoli inoculants.
- Improves biological nitrogen fixation.
- Increases nutrient and water uptake.
- Encourages vigorous vegetative growth.
- Improves flowering and pod setting.
- Enhances pod filling and seed development.
- Produces larger, healthier pods and beans.
- Improves grain weight and market quality.
- Enhances tolerance to drought and environmental stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting French bean, including:
- Damping-off
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Seed Rot
- Seedling Blight
- Fusarium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Sclerotium Stem Rot
- Dry Root Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects French bean through several biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with disease-causing fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that suppress pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes harmful fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and supports beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
These multiple mechanisms provide continuous protection while promoting healthier crop growth.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat French bean seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.
If using Rhizobium phaseoli inoculant, first apply Trichoderma, allow the seed to dry in the shade, and then apply the Rhizobium culture according to the recommended procedure.
Soil Application
Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost and broadcast uniformly before sowing.
Furrow Application
Apply Trichoderma-enriched compost directly into seed furrows to establish beneficial fungi around developing roots.
Drip Irrigation
Liquid Trichoderma formulations may be applied through drip irrigation or irrigation water according to the manufacturer's recommended dose.
