Trichoderma for Brinjal (Eggplant): Natural Biofungicide for Wilt Control, Root Rot Management & Higher Fruit Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
Brinjal (Solanum melongena), also known as Eggplant or Aubergine, is one of the most widely cultivated vegetable crops in tropical and subtropical regions. It is grown for fresh consumption, processing, and export. High productivity depends on healthy root development, continuous flowering, and sustained fruit production. However, brinjal is highly susceptible to destructive soil-borne fungal diseases such as Fusarium wilt, damping-off, root rot, collar rot, and southern blight, which can significantly reduce plant vigor, fruit yield, and profitability.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects brinjal roots against harmful pathogens while stimulating stronger root systems and improving soil microbial activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii rapidly colonize the rhizosphere, suppress pathogenic fungi, improve nutrient availability, and promote healthy plant growth throughout the crop cycle.
Unlike chemical fungicides that provide short-term disease control, Trichoderma establishes itself around the root zone, providing continuous biological protection while improving soil fertility and long-term crop health.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Brinjal
- Improves seed germination and nursery establishment.
- Protects seedlings from damping-off.
- Promotes vigorous root growth and root branching.
- Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water absorption.
- Encourages healthy vegetative growth.
- Increases flowering and flower retention.
- Enhances fruit setting and reduces flower drop.
- Produces larger, uniform, and better-quality fruits.
- Improves fruit firmness and shelf life.
- Enhances tolerance to drought, heat, and transplant stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Supports sustainable and organic brinjal cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting brinjal, including:
- Fusarium Wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melongenae)
- Damping-off
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Southern Blight (Sclerotium rolfsii)
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Fusarium Crown Rot
- Seedling Blight
- Seed Rot
Note: Trichoderma primarily manages soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as Phomopsis blight, Alternaria leaf spot, Cercospora leaf spot, and bacterial wilt require an integrated disease management approach.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects brinjal through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous plant growth.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat brinjal seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.
Nursery Bed Application
Mix 1–2 kg of Trichoderma per acre nursery area with well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost before sowing.
Root Dip Before Transplanting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting into the main field.
Soil Application
Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed FYM or compost and apply uniformly around the root zone during land preparation or after transplanting.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
