Trichoderma for Bottle Gourd (Lauki): Natural Biofungicide for Root Rot Control, Wilt Management & Higher Fruit Yield
ಹಂಚಿ
Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria), popularly known as Lauki or Calabash, is an important cucurbit vegetable cultivated for fresh consumption, processing, and commercial vegetable production. Healthy roots are essential for vigorous vine growth, continuous flowering, proper fruit development, and high marketable yield. Soil-borne fungal diseases such as damping-off, Fusarium wilt, root rot, collar rot, and southern blight can severely reduce plant stand, weaken vines, and lower fruit production.
Trichoderma is a beneficial fungal biofungicide that naturally protects bottle gourd roots against harmful pathogens while promoting stronger root systems and improving soil microbial activity. Species such as Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride, Trichoderma asperellum, and Trichoderma koningii colonize the rhizosphere, suppress disease-causing fungi, improve nutrient availability, and encourage vigorous vine growth throughout the crop cycle.
Unlike conventional fungicides that provide temporary disease suppression, Trichoderma establishes a beneficial microbial barrier around the root zone, offering season-long biological protection while improving soil fertility and crop performance.
Benefits of Trichoderma in Bottle Gourd
- Improves seed germination and early crop establishment.
- Protects seedlings from damping-off.
- Promotes vigorous root growth and root branching.
- Suppresses Fusarium wilt and root rot pathogens.
- Improves nutrient and water uptake.
- Encourages rapid vine growth and canopy development.
- Increases flowering and female flower production.
- Enhances fruit setting and reduces flower drop.
- Produces longer, uniform, and healthier fruits.
- Improves fruit firmness, colour, and shelf life.
- Enhances tolerance to drought, heat, and transplant stress.
- Increases beneficial microbial activity in the rhizosphere.
- Reduces dependence on chemical fungicides.
- Improves long-term soil fertility.
- Supports sustainable and organic bottle gourd cultivation.
Diseases Managed
Trichoderma helps suppress several economically important soil-borne diseases affecting bottle gourd, including:
- Damping-off
- Fusarium Wilt
- Root Rot
- Collar Rot
- Pythium Root Rot
- Rhizoctonia Root Rot
- Southern Blight (Sclerotium rolfsii)
- Seedling Blight
- Seed Rot
- Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina)
Note: Trichoderma is highly effective against soil-borne fungal diseases. Foliar diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, anthracnose, and angular leaf spot require an integrated disease management strategy.
Mode of Action
Trichoderma protects bottle gourd plants through multiple biological mechanisms:
- Rapidly colonizes the rhizosphere before pathogens establish.
- Competes with harmful fungi for nutrients and root space.
- Produces enzymes such as chitinase and glucanase that degrade fungal cell walls.
- Releases natural antifungal metabolites that inhibit pathogen growth.
- Directly parasitizes pathogenic fungi through mycoparasitism.
- Activates the plant's natural defense system (Induced Systemic Resistance).
- Stimulates root branching and increases root biomass.
- Improves soil microbial diversity and nutrient availability.
These biological mechanisms provide season-long disease protection while promoting vigorous vine growth and higher fruit production.
Recommended Application
Seed Treatment
Treat bottle gourd seed with 8–10 g of Trichoderma powder per kg of seed before sowing.
Nursery Bed Application
Where seedlings are raised in trays or nursery beds, mix 1–2 kg of Trichoderma per acre nursery area with well-decomposed farmyard manure (FYM) or compost before sowing.
Root Dip Before Transplanting
Prepare a suspension using 10–15 g of Trichoderma powder per litre of water. Dip seedling roots for 20–30 minutes before transplanting.
Soil Application
Mix 2–4 kg per acre of Trichoderma powder with 50–100 kg of well-decomposed FYM or compost and apply around the root zone during land preparation or after transplanting.
Drip Irrigation
Apply compatible liquid Trichoderma formulations through drip irrigation according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
