Sunn Hemp Biofertilizers, Biofungicides & Biopesticides for Higher Biomass, Nitrogen Fixation and Soil Improvement

Sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) is one of the most valuable green manure, cover crop and fiber crops cultivated for rapid biomass production, biological nitrogen fixation and soil improvement. It is widely grown to enhance soil organic matter, suppress weeds and improve the productivity of subsequent crops. Integrating biofertilizers, biofungicides and biopesticides further enhances root health, nutrient availability and crop vigor while maintaining sustainable soil fertility.

As a leguminous crop, sunn hemp forms an efficient symbiotic association with beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Biofertilizers improve nutrient cycling, stimulate vigorous root development and support rapid vegetative growth.

Rhizobium is the most important biofertilizer for sunn hemp because it forms nitrogen-fixing nodules that naturally supply much of the crop's nitrogen requirement. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) convert insoluble phosphorus into plant-available forms, encouraging strong root systems and rapid biomass accumulation. Potassium Mobilizing Bacteria (KMB) improve potassium uptake, enhancing stem strength, drought tolerance and overall plant vigor. NPK Microbial Consortia provide balanced nutrient mobilization throughout the crop cycle.

Micronutrients also contribute significantly to biomass production. Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria improve chlorophyll formation and photosynthetic efficiency. Sulphur Oxidizing Bacteria increase sulphur availability for protein synthesis and healthy plant growth. Mycorrhiza (AMF) expands the effective root system, improving phosphorus uptake and water absorption. Silicon Solubilizing Bacteria strengthen plant tissues and improve tolerance to heat, drought and lodging.

Sunn hemp may be affected by diseases including Fusarium wilt, root rot, damping-off, anthracnose, Cercospora leaf spot and collar rot. These diseases reduce plant stand, biomass production and fiber quality.

Beneficial microorganisms naturally suppress disease-causing pathogens in the rhizosphere. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma asperellum suppress soil-borne fungi while promoting vigorous root growth. Pseudomonas fluorescens acts as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), reducing disease pressure and improving crop vigor. Bacillus subtilis produces natural antimicrobial compounds that strengthen integrated disease management. Pseudomonas putida and Streptomyces lydicus further improve root protection and beneficial microbial diversity.

Major insect pests include hairy caterpillars, stem borers, aphids, thrips, termites, white grubs and leaf-eating caterpillars. These pests reduce foliage development and biomass accumulation.

Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (BTK) effectively controls susceptible caterpillar pests. Beauveria bassiana helps suppress aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Metarhizium anisopliae provides biological control of termites and white grubs. Lecanicillium lecanii supports biological management of aphids and thrips. Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia help suppress plant-parasitic nematodes and improve root health.

Applying microbial products through seed treatment and soil application before sowing allows beneficial microorganisms to establish rapidly around the roots. Combined with proper crop management, biological inputs improve nutrient-use efficiency, increase biomass production and enhance soil fertility for succeeding crops.
