Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Pythium Management

Streptomyces Lydicus for Mango Pythium Management

Pythium species are soil-borne pathogens that thrive in wet, poorly drained soils and can damage young feeder roots of mango trees. Root infections may reduce water absorption, restrict nutrient uptake, slow vegetative growth, and weaken overall tree health. Young orchards, nurseries, and newly transplanted mango saplings are particularly vulnerable when excessive soil moisture persists. Preventive management through healthy soil practices and beneficial microorganisms plays an important role in reducing disease pressure. Streptomyces lydicus is a beneficial soil bacterium and biological biofungicide that supports root-zone health and helps suppress important soil-borne pathogens as part of an integrated disease management (IDM) program.

After application through soil drenching, fertigation, or drip irrigation, Streptomyces lydicus colonizes the rhizosphere around feeder roots. It competes with Pythium and other harmful fungi for nutrients and root colonization sites while producing naturally occurring antimicrobial metabolites that help suppress pathogens including Pythium, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, and Phytophthora. This biological activity helps maintain a balanced microbial ecosystem that supports healthy root development and reduces pathogen pressure.

Healthy feeder roots improve the absorption of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, and other essential nutrients. Better nutrient uptake supports vigorous vegetative growth, balanced flowering, stronger fruit retention, improved fruit size, and superior fruit quality. Healthy root systems also improve tolerance to temporary waterlogging, irrigation fluctuations, and environmental stress, contributing to more stable orchard performance throughout the growing season.

For best results, Streptomyces lydicus should be integrated with proper drainage, balanced irrigation scheduling, orchard sanitation, and complementary beneficial microorganisms. It performs exceptionally well alongside Trichoderma, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus velezensis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Azotobacter, phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), potassium mobilizing bacteria (KMB), zinc-solubilizing bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, compost, vermicompost, and other organic soil amendments. Together, these biological inputs improve soil biodiversity, nutrient cycling, root vigor, and long-term orchard health.

Commercial mango growers increasingly incorporate Streptomyces lydicus into preventive biological management programs because maintaining healthy roots is essential for sustainable fruit production. By improving rhizosphere health, supporting beneficial microorganisms, enhancing nutrient efficiency, and helping suppress soil-borne pathogens, Streptomyces lydicus contributes to healthier orchards, improved yields, and long-term soil productivity. It is suitable for conventional, integrated, organic, and regenerative mango production systems.
