Pseudomonas fluorescens for Banana – Control Fusarium Wilt (Panama Disease) & Rhizome Rot
ಹಂಚಿ
Have you noticed your Nendran or Robusta banana plants turning yellow, then brown, and finally collapsing? That’s Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) – caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense. This fungus lives in the soil for decades. There is no effective chemical cure. Once it’s in your field, you can’t grow susceptible bananas for years.
Pseudomonas fluorescens is your organic solution – and it works.
What the research says:
-
Research on a liquid formulation of P. fluorescens showed that treatment at 4.0 L/ha reduced wilt incidence by 60% in banana plantations. It also significantly reduced the overall population of Helicotylenchus multicinctus (a nematode pest) by 41.3‑89.0% in treated fields.
-
Another study showed that soil application of P. fluorescens strain Pf10 reduced wilt incidence by 50% compared to the control.
-
The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) recommends seed treatment with Pseudomonas fluorescens (20 g/litre of water/kg of seed) and soil application of P. fluorescens fortified in neem cake to reduce disease incidence.
How P. fluorescens works against Fusarium wilt:
-
It produces antifungal metabolites that directly inhibit Fusarium oxysporum.
-
It induces defence enzymes in banana plants – studies show a significant increase in peroxidase (POX) activity and phenolic content in P. fluorescens‑treated banana plants after challenge with the wilt pathogen.
-
It detoxifies fusaric acid – a toxin produced by the Fusarium fungus.
How to apply Pseudomonas fluorescens on banana:
Sucker treatment (before planting):
-
Mix 10g of Bactostore’s Pseudomonas powder (or 10 ml liquid) in 1 litre of water
-
Dip the base of the banana sucker or tissue‑culture plantlet for 10‑15 minutes
-
Shade dry for 30 minutes before planting
Pit treatment (at planting):
-
Take 200‑250g of Pseudomonas powder per pit
-
Mix with 10‑15 kg of well‑decomposed FYM
-
Incorporate into the pit soil
Soil drench for existing plants (every 2‑3 months):
-
Mix 200‑250g of powder (or 200‑250 ml liquid) in 10 litres of water
-
Drench around the root zone
For infested fields (pre‑planting):
-
Mix 2‑4 kg of Pseudomonas powder per acre with 200‑300 kg FYM
-
Broadcast and incorporate into the soil before planting
Important: Remove and destroy plants that are already fully infected. Pseudomonas works best as a preventive and for early‑stage infections.
Farmer testimonial: “Panama disease was destroying our Nendran bananas. After dipping suckers in Bactostore Pseudomonas solution and drenching the soil every 2 months, disease incidence has dropped significantly. Our bananas are now healthier and yield has increased.” – Radhika, Kollam.
